Shop Preview: Something for Everyone

The shop has been somewhat quiet lately. We've been focusing some of our energy on the Flea Market, some of it on other opportunities outside of vintage. But I have a few stacks of vintage goodies that have been waiting to get their pictures taken so they can go online, including these 6 pairs of truly awesome shoes, in a variety of styles (and some larger "normal" sizes, i.e. NOT 5's!):

Row 1: 80s satin heels w/ gold embroidery, size 8 /// 50s Deadstock Lavender Canvas Mary Jane Heels, size 8.5/9 /// 60s Rhinestone Pilgrim Heels, size 9N

Row 2:  Vintage Pink and Cream Tretorn Sneakers, size 7 /// Vintage Black and White Leather Spectators, Size 8 /// Vintage White-on-White Tretorn Sneakers, size 7

If you're interested in any of the beauties (they'll be going up the next two days) before they're in the shop, send us a message/comment/email!

Sister Dreamrobe: Summer in the City

This week's dreamrobe is inspired by a city vacation--the important thing is to be comfortable (no high heels!) and cool. We both got a little bohemian this week, with a touch of grunge.  Maybe these are the perfect looks for a tour of Seattle?

Vintage Fleetwood Mac Tee Shirt (worn knotted at the waist!), $185 via sugarshackvintage ///
70s Red Prairie Skirt, $32 via retroandme /// Vintage Kilim and Leather Tote Bag, $96 via alchemievintage /// Vintage Whiting and David Chunky Ring and Bracelet Set, $55 via JuneeMoonVintage ///
Vintage Riding Boots, $85 via Twenty20Vintage

90s Knit Crop Top, $30 via juliahaltvintage /// 90s Floral Flouncy Shorts, $19 via kiwifinds /// Vintage Silk Floral Headscarf, $18 via  fadedroses/// Vintage Tooled Leather Clutch, $42.50 via VintageSoup /// 80s Lace Up Leather Sandals, $28 via purevintageclothing

So many beautiful vintage pieces to dream about...which would you pick if you could have JUST ONE?

P.S. In case you hadn't heard via Twitter, Amanda's baby girl came 6 weeks early. She is still in the hospital, but she's doing great and should come home soon. In the meantime, we are playing catch-up with the shop and blog, so please bare with us (and stay tuned for photos and updates!).

Sister Dreamrobe: Summer Daydreams

We're all about being thrifty around here, but that doesn't mean we can't dream of beautiful vintage things that are just a little (or a lot) outside of our budgets.  We wanted to share a new little blog feature where we scrounge Etsy for our perfect outfit, as though money is no object (nor pregnancy bellies, in Amanda's case). So here, we bring to you the first installment of Sister Dreamrobe:
1.  1940s Sundress with Pockets, $85 via CreatedandCollected /// 2.  1940s Enamel Cherry Brooch, $42.99 via QuiltsETC /// 3.  1940s Telephone Cord Clutch, $55 via VirginiasVice ///
4. 1940s Red Heels, $78 via therobotparade
1.  1970s Mini Dress, $58 via caramelizedvintage /// 2. Vintage Jade Cuff, $59 via mkmack ///
3. Vintage Market Tote, $48 via FarmsteadVintage ///
4. Vintage Leather Boho Boots, $93 via mustlovevintage

Of course, our personalized styles come through--Amanda's pinup vibe and Jayme's bohemian flare.  This is just a small taste of the great vintage you can find on Etsy (sadly, it's mixed in with a lot of not-so-great or not-authentic vintage).  We hope you see some things you might dream of--and start saving for--too!

Shop Preview: Sneakers, Wovens, Heels

I am still working through photographing my haul from our Chambersburg trip.  This morning I got through most of the shoes.  We were really on the hunt for great vintage sandals but didn't stumble across much (one pair, that's shown below.  and I wish so badly they were my size!).  In the process we did find some other great shoes...

SNEAKERS

WOVENS

HEELS

All coming to the shop in the next few days!  Keep your eyes peeled.
Happy Friday!

Shop Preview: In Bloom

Spring is just about over and all of the flower seeds I planted weeks ago are finally close to blooming.  We also have some new florals popping up in the shop this week!  Here's a little peek at my favorites...

a swingy floral blazer

a 1970's dress with the prettiest purple flower print
(I would wear this would the tie open and the top button undone)

a tulip covered circle skirt

Watch for these things in the shop very soon!  And don't forget to stock up on awesome winter duds for cheap in our winter sale section!

10 Under $20: Vintage Midi Skirts

It seems like everyone is all about the maxi skirt come summertime, but as I've discussed via Twitter with some fashionable friends, the midi skirt is really the most flattering skirt for every shape (and still means you just have to shave halfway up your calves, if you want). I perused Etsy for midi skirts in various shapes and prints, and the best part is, they're all under $20! Pair with a basic tank and sandals, and you'll be stylin' in vintage! For those who are still not sure about vintage, a skirt is a great place to start, after accessories.

Here are 10 of my favorites:

1. 80s Floral Full Midi Skirt, $18
Fuller skirts are great for fuller hips (trust me, I know) and a high waist creates an hourglass look.

2. 70s Applique Wrap Skirt, $13
I love a good wrap skirt for summer, and this one is so sweet in chambray!

3. 70s Full Prairie Skirt, $16
For the bohemian gal.

4.  Vintage Bandanna Print Midi, $18
The perfect skirt for 4th of July BBQ's!

5.  Vintage Classic Polka Dot Midi Skirt, $18.70
This would look adorable with a graphic tee on top.

6. Vintage Checked Midi Skirt, $15
A great skirt if you want to try mixing patterns!

7. 80s Beige Geometric Midi Skirt, $14
The perfect nude: pair it with a white tank and brown leather belt + sandals.

8.  80s Bright Tribal Print Midi Skirt, $18
Great colors in a bold pattern!

9.  70s Handkerchief Print Skirt, $10.50 TOP PICK!!!
My favorite of the bunch...if it was my size, it would already be in my shopping cart.

10. 80s purple velour midi skirt, $10
For the grunge ladies:  how amazing would this be with some creepers and round shades?

Which skirt is your favorite? Will you be trying out midi skirts this summer?

Shop Preview: Spring Bags

I like big bags, and I cannot lie. It's probably a symptom of being a mom, since a purse also becomes a pseudo diaper bag.  But I have a collection of cute smaller purses and clutches that I use to go out for events or date nights--and yes, they're almost all vintage!

Here are some pretty purses that are coming to the shop this week, from totes to backpacks to ladylike shoulder bags:

leather and jute elephant market tote /// tooled leather and textile mini backpack ///
leather and cotton striped tote /// chain strap leather purse /// straw and leather structured box purse

If anything strikes your fancy, don't hesitate to contact us for info...everything will be under $50 (most closer to $25/$30)!

Amanda Loves...

Happy Friday!  Did you know we have over 300 items in the shop?  Sometimes, I will forget we have something because we posted it a while ago, and then it will come up to be renewed, and I'll be reminded of how awesome it is! Jayme and I are going to share some of our "loves" from the shop this month.

With a blizzard on the way for the East coast, it's hard to imagine spring will ever come...I take consolation in pretty pieces that can transition from this season to the next.

1.  1950s Embroidered Cardigan, $25.60 /// 2. 1990s Rayon Floral Blouse, $19.20 /// 3. 1950s Silk Floral Skirt, $38.40 /// 4. 1970s Don Luis of Spain dress, $34.40  /// 5. 1970s Peasant Skirt, $20.80

We've got something floral no matter what your style--bohemian, pinup, grunge...Find some more flowery pieces here (and remember, the whole shop is marked down 20% this month!!!).

Have a wonderful weekend, friends!

Vintage Gift Guide: The Vintage Virgin

Being a vintage seller, I sometimes feel a little like an evangelist, preaching the virtues of vintage even to people who are kind of creeped out by already-worn clothes.  Have a friend or family member whose interest has been piqued, but they haven't jumped on the vintage bandwagon yet?  Here are some great vintage gifts that almost anyone could love...well-made, classic and classy.

The Gifts
1.  Tribal Print Wrap Cardigan, $38.40 via BombshellsandBabes

These printed cardigans are a huge trend in modern fashion, but in the 70s they were way better made...why pay the same price for something that will fall apart in 6 months?

2.  Fedora, $19 (Steal!) via aniandrose

For a guy or a gal!  A classic hat...for vintage, look for large or extra large to be sure they will fit. Waists were smaller in the day, but from my experience with vintage hats, I think heads were smaller too!

3.  Watch Pendant Necklace, $35 via TwoMoxie

There are so many fun vintage pendant necklaces out there (actually, many modern shops use these as prototypes to design new things...), especially in the 1970s.  I love this watch piece, but if you search for _________________ pendant, (fill in the blank with a friends hobby, interest or initial) on Etsy, you can definitely find something unique!

4.  Enamel Flower Brooch, $16 via RareSpeciesVintage

1960s enamel brooches are one of my favorite things to hunt for. They're so bright and cheerful...and how could you beat the polka dots on this one?! Too cute.

5. Dooney and Bourke Leather Bag, $42 via slatevintager

A beautiful designer leather bag at an amazing price...this is another reason to buy vintage!  Bags like D&B and Coach are made to be worn in. They get better with age.

6.  Fisherman Sweater, $42 via BetaBoutique

Another pleasing piece for a male or female--a fisherman sweater is cozy and classic. It goes with everything, and you can even find it in a cardigan style (my favorites have toggle buttons or hoods!). You can also buy it a size or two larger for a slouchier look.

7.  Liberty of London Scarf SOLD LAST NIGHT BEFORE POSTING!
But you can find a few similar styles here and here.
.
A vintage cotton or silk scarf makes a great gift because it's so versatile.  Liberty of London has some gorgeous prints, so you can't go wrong! Other brands to try:  Vera Neumann, Oscar d la Renta, Christian Dior, and of course, Hermes (if money's not an object!).

8.  Wrangler Denim Jacket, $65 via pineapplemint

Everyone could use a perfectly worn-in denim jacket in their wardrobe. For vintage, I love Wrangler, Levi's and Lee in a medium wash.  Bonus points if they're a little distressed!

So tell us...Which piece would you want to be your "first time"?

Amanda

Vintage Trend We're Loving: Fruit Salad

Is it weird to love a trend that already happened?  Not really--since we know fashion is a cycle, and so many trends come around again and again (hello, NEON!).

I have recently fallen in love with fruit.  Not the actual good-for-you, tasty stuff--although it's good too--but fruit motifs: on dresses, skirts, home decor, etc.  If you saw Tuesday's post, I recently bought a cherry print dress, and ever since, I have been noticing a lot of super cute vintage pieces that are totally fruity.  (And yeah, I did just go there.)

strawberry sundress, $115 via Thrush  ///  apple print skirt, $32 via CapriciousTraveler

cherry sundress, $35 via bookwormvintage  ///  fruit bowl maxi dress, $42 via TheVintageMistress

fruit salad necklace, $50 via MamaVendredi  /// fruit cocktail velvet milliner hat, $85 via StacyLeighAtelier

disco fruit platforms (AH-MAZING!), $325 via AtomicPassion  /// strawberry flats, $50 via 80sman

OJ pitcher and glasses, $25 via Poplar Street Vintage  ///Vera Neumann cloth napkins, $20 via heatherkojan

I have so many favorites here...good thing they're all saved in my Etsy faves!

What's your take on the fruit trend? Too cutesy? Only in small doses?

Music to Our Eyes: Florence Welch

Even though Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine had already made her mark overseas, she and her quirky style only exploded onto the US scene a few years ago.  We love her music (though still, admittedly, more a fan of Lungs than Ceremonials), and the way she incorporates vintage pieces into her wardrobe, which is a little bit boho, a little bit gothic.  She is super cool and quirky--you can guarantee she won't be showing up to a party wearing the same thing as someone else (and that's what we love about vintage too!).

Think you can pull of one of Flo's looks, head to toe? Maybe just a piece or two?

Music to Our Eyes: Joy Williams

I have been a music lover since my earliest memory.  I've shared a little on the blog about my band, The Crooked Hearts--it's just me, on vocals, and my friend Jason on guitar/vocals.  Simple and pared down. Lots of harmonies. Jason and I met and started collaborating over our love for the band The Civil Wars, a male/female duo made up of  Joy Williams and John Paul White.

Their music is the stuff dreams are made of.  And so is Joy's wardrobe.  She can get away with a wardrobe of all black by mixing textures and cuts and adding some sparkle with accessories.  Her dresses may not be vintage, but they are certainly vintage-inspired:  1950s full skirted dresses and Hollywood siren-worthy gowns. I scoured some of my favorite Etsy vintage shops for some Joy-inspired looks.

Everyday Pretty (Clockwise from top left):
 1930s Peeptoe Heels- 4birdsvintage, Gold Rhinestone Locket-salvagelife

Your Big Night (Clockwise from top left):
Simple Gold Bar Bangle- diamentdesigns, 1940s Black Silk Beaded Evening Gown- AnaChronos, Chandelier Earrings- RAKcreations, Strappy Heels- FabGabs

Joy is absolutely stunning, but it's her voice and stage presence that really takes the cake. Go and check out their music if you haven't already--better yet, see a live show! (Though it may be a while, since Joy recently had her first child.)

We look forward to sharing more "Music to Our Eyes" posts with you!  Whose rockstar wardrobe do you want to steal?

Shop the Look: Vintage Beach Babe

Jayme and I are quite excited about a long weekend getaway with our family later this month.  Traditionally, our family has spent many summers together at the beach, but this summer, with two walking, talking toddlers on our hands, we're trying something a little different (even though there will be some beach time involved) by taking a little trip to West Virginia for hot springs, art galleries, hiking, biking, etc.  At the end of the summer, Q and I and the girls have our yearly family beach trip to Cape May--even though it seems so far away, I am already dreaming of morning breakfast bike rides, books on the beach, naps, and catching some rays.

The shop is stocked with some very cute beach-appropriate clothing and accessories at amazing prices. I put together this look for a day at the beach, from day to night.

With Fourth of July being our next big holiday, I went with a color palette of red, white and blue with neutral accents. For day, throw on the gingham shirt dress over your bathing suit, slip on some red flat sandals, fill up your tote with snacks, magazines, your iPod, a good book, and some sunscreen, and don't forget your hat!  After a day in the sun, slip out of your suit and into this gorgeous bohemian floral sundress and bring along a beachy, oversized clutch for all your necessities. Dust the sand off your red sandals, and you're ready to go (seafood, perhaps?).

Shop Preview: Get Your Pedi Ready

I can't help it: even when I don't need them, even when I say I won't buy any more, a cute pair of vintage shoes will always weasel its way into my closet, or, in this case, the shop's closet. Unfortunately, none of these fit me, but that's good for everyone else. :)

clockwise from top:  Brazilian leather sandals (size 7), 1970s Famolare platforms (Size 9), Bass Leather sandals with cutouts (Size 7), Kilim Mules (Size 7N), White Saltwater Sandals (Size 5)

See something you're interested in?  These haven't made their way into the shop yet, so our readers--as always--get first dibs! Just drop us an email or Etsy convo.

I hope everyone is getting a chance to enjoy some beautiful weather!  I, for one, cannot get enough of displaying my pretty red pedicure in my favorite sandals (of which I have, no joke, about 10 pairs).

Shop Preview: Naughty Nautical

I love the classic vibe of red, navy and white together, especially when those colors are the palette for sailing/boating-inspired looks. Pastels and florals are always in for spring, but why not try a little red, white and blue? You'll look more like a pin-up girl than a petunia. ;)

Coming soon, to a vintage shop near you (virtually, anyway):
1970s Sheer navy blue sailor blouse, size L/XL
1960s wool shift dress with contrasting blazer, size Medium
1980s bowtie blouse (tie is removable!), size Large
1960s Jonathan Logan micro-mini dress with matching striped cardigan, Size Small/Medium

If anything tickles your fancy, just let us know, and we can get you more details before these babies come into the shop this week.  We've been posting new things everyday, so be sure to visit our Etsy page for some spring shopping!

Topshop: Inspired by Vintage

We love Topshop (but would love it even more if it could come to the United States in shop form!) They have amazing items, from basics to statement pieces, and their pricing is reasonable (though U.S. shipping costs a pretty penny). Of course, Topshop is still a little out of our bargain-loving price range, but we couldn't help but notice (whoa--Carrie Bradshaw mode activated) some items that were so similar to vintage ones we have in the shop right now, at a fraction of the price.

Shop Preview: Favorite Finds

Any avid thrifter will tell you that part of the joy of thrifting is the thrill of the chase. Some days you will come home empty handed, others you will have two trash bags full of goodies. Recently, for me, I have been unearthing one or two great pieces at a time. These pieces were all found in the same 1 week period at different shops, but they are 4 of my most beloved finds in recent memory.

The Details:  1950s cropped mustard sweater, 1960s tweed cape with faux fur trim, 1950s floral wiggle dress, 1960s cheetah print abstract maxi dress

It was was a gorgeous day, but the lighting is a little dark...will fix that right up before posting this beauties into the shop next week! Off to wrap and post a few more.
