Music To Our Eyes: First Aid Kit

I first discovered the band First Aid Kit when I was flipping through Nylon magazine and stumbled upon the photo below of the duo--the white kaftan was identical to one we sold in the shop!  While it most likely wasn't the exact one (the sisters hail from Sweden and we had sold the dress to someone in the U.S.), it was still pretty cool to see such a unique piece being styled in a photo shoot.

Since then, the band has grown in popularity...but their style remains the same:  VERY 1970's hippy chick.  Exaggerated prints and high waisted denim, floppy hats and waist length hair.  I'm pretty sure that their wardrobe is not just vintage-inspired, but that they're sporting actual vintage, head to toe.

Want to get their look?  Here are some Etsy vintage pieces that would help you do just that:
1.  wide brim hat via Scottieina Canoe
2.  long necklace with oversized medallion via Brass Giraffe Vintage
3.  1970's maxi dress via Neon Navajo
4.  denim vest via rerun vintage
5.  high waisted jeans via awesometown vintage
6.  1970's gauzy gown via Miskabelle Vintage
7.  leather purse via Miskabelle Vintage
8.  platform sandals via Kamiann

If you're in the mood for folky-mellow music, you have to check out First Aid Kit!
And of course I love the fact that they're a sister duo... ; )

Music to our Eyes: Jenny Lewis

Jenny Lewis (formerly of Rilo Kiley...still in a will they/won't get back together thing, sigh) is sort of the epitome of hipster style, with her blunt bags and vintage appeal.  But I must say, I think we could credit her with being one of the original hipsters.  In the past 10 years or so, her style hasn't wavered.  She sticks with a similar haircut and similar 70's style--high waist denim, vintage tees, oversized sunglasses (with the occasional 60's mod mini).

Want to get Jenny's look?  Here are few Etsy vintage finds, with her style in mind:

1.  Bright Red High Waist Jeans  by paramount vintage
2.  Black Fedora by alexandria carter
3.  Heart Locket by shop rhubarb
4.  White Framed Shades by vommeer vintage
5.  Nautical Scarf by miskabelle vintage
6.  Sailor Playsuit by zwzzy
7.  High Waist White Shorts by Rabbit Rabbit Vintage
8.  Navy Platform Sandals by Miskabelle Vintage
9.  Vintage Concert Tee by the get up vintage

We admire her music AND admire her style, so she is definitely music to our eyes!

Music to Our Eyes: Lindi Ortega

The great thing about being in a band with someone who really "gets" me is that my bandmate, Jason, always has new music to recommend for me.  A couple of weeks ago, he got me hooked on Lindi Ortega, who was in town, opening for Social Distortion.  Not only did I absolutely love her music (and download "Little Red Boots" right away), but I also dig her style!  She's a mix of vintage, bohemian, rockabilly, pinup, western--basically, all of my favorite styles rolled into one.

I'm not sure I could pull off all of these looks, but I'm definitely hankering for a pair of little red boots of my own (and that cute little western dress!).

Go check out Lindi's music (start with the song "Little Lie," and you'll be hooked!), as well as these pieces from some awesome vintage shops on Etsy!

Music to Our Eyes: Kimbra

Most Americans' first glimpse of this pretty lady was probably in the nude (and a little paint) in the viral video for Gotye's Somebody That I Used to Know.  But she's more than just a scorned ex to Gotye's jilted lover:  she makes music of her own. And it's really good.  It's hard to pinpoint a genre, as it's influenced by a variety of musical styles, depending on the song. And the same can be said of Kimbra's personal style:  it's all over the place, but that's a good thing.

Kimbra has a bright and quirky style with a lot of textures and frequently an element of surprise in any outfit (a great lesson in style!).  Her looks definitely incorporate a lot of vintage pieces and cuts, so Etsy was a great place to recreate some of her original outfits on a dime!

I love how Kimbra's looks incorporate very classic pieces that almost anyone has in their closet, but she gives them a flair all her own.

But don't just look: give her a listen too (if you haven't already, I recommend Settle Down as a track to start with!).

Music to Our Eyes: Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey has become quite a popular musician as of late, especially to "fashion people" (I can't even count how many tweets I saw during fashion week, from bloggers attending shows, talking about how Lana Del Rey's music was used in seemingly EVERY show).  Well, it seems as though not only is she garnering attention for her music but also her sense of style--which closely mimics her music--with it's 50's/60's vibe meets new age/indie sound.

Seems like an odd mix--the ladylike 50's silhouettes bouffants and flower crowns, mixed with 90's grunge rocker t-shirts and cut off shorts.  But she makes it make sense.

You can get Lana's look by mixing and matching these vintage pieces, found in some of our favorite etsy shops!
1.  High top sneakers via Dressed Up Like a Lady (google "Lana Del Rey" and you'll see she rocks these quite frequently--with dresses.)

2. Chunky rope chain necklace via Miskabelle (it even has a heart at the end of the chain in the back!)

3.  Floral head piece via Flannery Crane

4.  Sleeveless button up via shopCOLLECT (wear it buttoned up the whole way to the neck.)

5.  Levi's high rise cut-offs via Miskabelle

6.  Vintage Harley tee via ShopExile

7.  Floral statement ring via MaejeanVintage

8.  50's-esque lace dress via PARASOLvintage (pair with a funky belt.)

What musician's style are you into right now?

Music to Our Eyes: Joy Williams

I have been a music lover since my earliest memory.  I've shared a little on the blog about my band, The Crooked Hearts--it's just me, on vocals, and my friend Jason on guitar/vocals.  Simple and pared down. Lots of harmonies. Jason and I met and started collaborating over our love for the band The Civil Wars, a male/female duo made up of  Joy Williams and John Paul White.

Their music is the stuff dreams are made of.  And so is Joy's wardrobe.  She can get away with a wardrobe of all black by mixing textures and cuts and adding some sparkle with accessories.  Her dresses may not be vintage, but they are certainly vintage-inspired:  1950s full skirted dresses and Hollywood siren-worthy gowns. I scoured some of my favorite Etsy vintage shops for some Joy-inspired looks.

Everyday Pretty (Clockwise from top left):
 1930s Peeptoe Heels- 4birdsvintage, Gold Rhinestone Locket-salvagelife

Your Big Night (Clockwise from top left):
Simple Gold Bar Bangle- diamentdesigns, 1940s Black Silk Beaded Evening Gown- AnaChronos, Chandelier Earrings- RAKcreations, Strappy Heels- FabGabs

Joy is absolutely stunning, but it's her voice and stage presence that really takes the cake. Go and check out their music if you haven't already--better yet, see a live show! (Though it may be a while, since Joy recently had her first child.)

We look forward to sharing more "Music to Our Eyes" posts with you!  Whose rockstar wardrobe do you want to steal?

Amanda
