Vintage Halloween Costumes, Part 2: Grab Bag

Jayme and I were texting costume ideas back and forth to brainstorm for these blog posts, and while the TV characters one fell together right away, the other ideas we had were not thematically related. So part 2 of our Vintage Halloween Costumes post is a veritable smorgasbord of costumes...a little something for everyone.

Seeing how easy it is to piece together a look makes me love vintage even more...and the great thing is that so many of these pieces can stand alone in your day-to-day wardrobe. Why buy a cheap piece of overpriced polyester from a costume store when you could by high quality vintage items and get to wear them again?!  <steps off soapbox>

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Let us know if you're wearing vintage in the comments below!

Vintage Halloween Costumes, Part 1: TV Characters

Only three more days until Halloween...I'm sure many of you donned costumes for parties this weekend, but if not, and you're planning on dressing up for trick-or-treat night, we're sharing some easy ways to dress up with vintage pieces!

SHOP: vest /// shirt /// dress

SHOP: tote /// romper /// sandals

SHOP:  necklace /// dress /// sneakers

Which look is your favorite?  We will always love Gidget and Kelly K., but for Jayme and I, Jordan Catalano Angela Chase will always have a special place in our hearts.

I'm not sure if Jayme is going to get dressed up, but our family has a Day of the Dead/Halloween party on Saturday, and I'm excited to share our very vintage-inspired couples costume on the blog next week!

Stay tuned for last minute costumes, part 2 tomorrow!

Trick or Treat!

Considering that fact that Amanda and I (and our girls) have wardrobes that are 99% vintage/thrifted/DIY, it's no surprise that our little ones' Halloween costumes fit those criteria.

Here's a look at their outfits-- Aurora as a cowgirl and Lyla as a kitty cat!

Aurora's singin' cowgirl costume........
Cowgirl hat- Gymboree/thrifted, $2
Vintage blouse- thrifted for $2
Vintage leather vest-thrifted for $5
Vintage skirt via MsTips on Etsy, $10
Cowgirl boots, $5
Mini guitar- her 2nd birthday gift from Mama and Dada

Despite the fact that every time I asked Lyla what she wanted to be for Halloween she would say "a cow!"...I convinced her that a cat would be a fun idea (she was a skunk last year and I didn't want another black and white costume).
White hat and mittens: $1 each (Walmart)
DIY ears: hand sewn from a ruined cashmere sweater
Tights: $2.50 (Walmart)
DIY onesie (already owned): fabric glued spots cut from same sweater.
Eyes and nose- my own eye liner!

We think it is so much more fun to put together a homemade look, like these, rather than buy a costume straight from the store.  It also guarantees your little one's look will be one of kind!

A Very Vintage Halloween

For some people, Halloween means figuring out which sexy human services character to be (nurse, police, firefighter...).  Or figuring out how to make a typically mundane job into something more...titillating (construction worker, anyone?).

I can still remember living in a college town many years ago and seeing a group of girls dressed up as Victoria's Secret angels...in 40 degrees-or-below weather, meaning: they were simply wearing lingerie and heels and angel/fairy wings, walking the streets.

Now, I am not going to be judgmental here: wear what you want. Enjoy yourself and your 20-year-old, pre-baby body. But we like our costumes to leave a little to the imagination, and of course, what better way to do that than vintage?  Not to mention that you can still wear/use many of these pieces after October 31st.

Here are four quick and easy costume ideas from the shop--just add a couple of accessories and you'll be ready to party! Or, you know, dole out candy to neighborhood trick-or-treaters, then pick out all of your favorites from your (sleeping) child's bag and go to bed with a sugar high...

Shop These Looks: Easy Halloween

This is the first year in a long time that I've been excited for Halloween. We're doing some family costumes for a neighborhood block party/parade and have been working to get our outfits together all week (can't wait to share photos!).  I actually can't remember the last time I dressed up!  Here are 4 Halloween costumes, just two pieces each, that you could throw on for a last-minute party or to simply hand out Halloween candy from the comfort of your doorway.

Even better?  For those of you who want to leave a little to the imagination (unlike most Halloween costumes out there for the ladies), these are all cute, but covered up enough not to get you kicked out of a pumpkin patch.

Cowgirl might be a pretty common costume, but I guarantee most gals will be in short daisy dukes and a plaid western shirt tied at the navel.  Stand out from the crowd with a cute square-dancing dress paired with your favorite cowboy boots!

A metallic maxi dress and heavy jewelry create the look of Ancient Greek royalty.  Just add some heavy eye makeup and maybe a faux weapon (depending on your favorite goddess of myth!).

The easiest part of this outfit?  You can go barefoot! (Although I don't recommend it for walking the streets in temperatures below 50 degrees, like it will be around these parts!).  A headband worn over the forehead completes the look.

This dress makes the costume!  Pair it with this vintage fascinator, and a pair of opaque black tights and fun black heels (maybe these?). You'll be warm AND look great!
