Valentine's Outfit Ideas: From the Shop

I feel like a lot of our most adorable pieces in the shop often get overlooked.  We love the ease of photographing garments on a dress form, but I'm not sure it always gives a good glimpse of what the piece actually looks like on.  So I decided to play dress up this weekend and pick out a few outfit ideas, from the shop, that would be perfect for Valentine's Day.  (OH, and our entire shop is currently 20% off, so not only are these things cute, but they're cheap!)

First up...the "vampy" look.  I felt like I was channeling Amanda a bit, with the pin-up-y vibe--red lips and head scarf.  It is pretty cold around these parts, so I'd probably add a leather jacket on my way out the door!

Next, a "chic" look.  I guess that's my way of saying not-so over the top.  Very classic.  

Something I think would be great for a first date.  Blazer + skinny jeans + heels.  Can't go wrong!

And lastly, for the true vintage lover, a lady-like look.  This sweet little 1940s/50s dress is perfection.  It comes with a matching belt, but I decided to give it some contrast with a leather belt instead.

Celebrity Looks for Less: Summer Layers

I love summer but I definitely think it's the most difficult time of year to dress interestingly.  It just gets too hot to accessorize or add layers.  Here a few celebrity looks for summer with some flare, and of course, their Miskabelle vintage counterparts.

Christa Allen (from Revenge) 

This is a perfect summer-evening-out look.  I like the skirt and top combo because it gives the option of variety, rather than just pulling on a dress.

Diane Kruger (or as I like to call her, "Pacey's girlfriend")  

This look is a great day time event look (perhaps a bridal shower?).  A thin belt gives it some interest without being fussy.  And yay for comfy shoes!  Our version of the dress is a little more flouncy and maybe harder to pull off for just a walk to the local coffee shop.

Jessica Alba (she needs no introduction)

A denim vest is an easy layer to pull on for summer that won't be too hot to handle.  Not sure I'd rock the scarf with it...unless it was a cooler day.

Splurge and Steal: Warm Texture

It has been a while since we have had a splurge and steal up on the blog...so just to refresh your memory, we create an outfit from 3 to 4 pieces from the shop (steals) and one pricier or designer piece (splurge) that completes the look. Typically, our entire Miskabelle look will come in under the price of the one splurge.

This week's look is a cozy casual or work look pulling from several decades:

The cape is very 70s Bohemian and in excellent condition (wear it over a pretty floral, striped or polka dot blouse!). Add 1950s wool pants (never worn), rolled up with some cute, warm socks tucked into these fantastic boots. There is nothing like pair of women's comfort shoes like these Bellatrix Canoe Hiker Boots from Born! They are so chic AND warm AND kind to your feet for those long walks in the freezing cold. Finally, you can tote everything you need in this great oversized business tote/bag. We love the blend of masculine and feminine in this look--the cape is soft and the boots and pants are a little tough:  that's our kind of girl!

Outfit Post: Hysteric

We had quite an eventful weekend here (Saturday's snow being the LEAST exciting of these events).  My stepdaughter's high school had an "American Idol" contest...she made it to the last round, which was Saturday night.  She learned to play some guitar chords for both nights to do her songs acoustically (how awesome is that?), and honestly, I should be sharing her outfit here because she looked so great for her final performance (to her dad's dismay).

She didn't become the Idol of the school, but she did an amazing little performance of Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Hysteric."  And this is what I wore as part of her fan club... (sorry for the inside photos: blame the snow and the early darkness that comes with it).

I found this jumper/dress at the thrift this week and had to keep it (at least, for now).  It would be great as a summer tank dress, but I thought it would look cute with a top underneath and a belt.  You can't tell but the top half is thermal and the bottom is a lightweight cotton.  I like the contrast of fabrics, as well as the contrast of such a utilitarian fabric, like thermal (so grunge!) with this pinky nude color.  I paired it with my tough boots and black accessories so it wasn't too sweet.

She was excited to pose with me (and even more excited for the SHOW!)

I wore an entirely different costume for Halloween (which I'll share with you all later!). We had a neighborhood block party/celebration yesterday. Thankfully, the snow had melted and the sun came out.

Hope everyone had a fantastic weekend! I'm looking forward to taking Aurora trick or treating for a little bit tonight, and this is the first year in a while that I'll be sad to see this crazy Halloween season end!

Dress Yourself in Etsy Vintage

I'm trying a new little feature on the blog...since I'm obsessed with Etsy shopping (window shopping mostly, since I would have to file for bankruptcy if I bought everything I wanted), I thought that maybe once a week I'd put together an outfit based 100% on Etsy pieces that I love.  Here's my first look--it's pretty girly, a little gothic/romantic, definitely a cute date night outfit.  What do you think?

Something really fun about this outfit is that the pieces are pulled from so many different decades:  the skirt is 50s, belt is 60s, heels are 70s and sweater is 80s.  Yet it all goes together!  More proof that with clothing styles, what goes around comes around.  That's why a lot of people also have trouble dating vintage Etsy items unless they are clearly labeled. Some pieces are so classic they could fit in most decades.  These are the pieces I'm trying to collect for my own wardrobe (some great knee high boots, a pair of amazing heels, a full or pencil black skirt, strappy sandals, a trench coat, a bomber jacket, a floral dress, a plaid button up).  What are your vintage must-haves?

Outfit Post: Vintage Lovin' Sisters

These days I don't have much reason to get out of my pj's let alone get "dressed up" (for those of you who are new to the blog--I just had a baby in December and am now a stay at home mama.  You can read about those adventures here).  And while I do make an effort to at least change out of pj's each morning and into clothes that could be potentially worn in public...if I were to actually venture out into a public place...(which is a rare occasion as of late) those clothes usually consist of jeans and a sweater.  So I was super excited for Amanda to come visit this past weekend--a chance to see my sister and a chance to try out a pretty new vintage frock!

We were celebrating Aurora's (Amanda's baby gal) first birthday....and also dressed with the intention of having some shots for promotional purposes (we are super excited about a blog redesign...coming SOON!).  So yes, we did purposely wear outfits that kinda 'matched.'

Anyway...enough of the chit chat.  Let's check out the clothes....

Most places of business have relatively basic dress codes. Unless you're at a super-creative job where you can wear whatever you want, subtlety is key.  But that doesn't mean you can't do vintage! 

I'd wear this to work (if I didn't work from home) when it's chilly, replacing the heels with flats just for the commute.

LUST LUST LUST: Spring Sprang Sprung

Hey, remember two weeks ago when I said I missed snow?  No? Me neither.  Because we had a bunch of the heavy wet stuff this week, which gave me a case of cabin fever and gave my husband a 6 hour commute from work (normally 30 minutes) on Wednesday night.  Nice knowing you snow, but I'm ready for spring.  This is an ode to my LUST for florals, sunshine, bare legs and pedicures.

Pretty Girls Wear Miskabelle!

Three Looks as the Leaves Fall

We recently announced our 50% off all summer items sale.  You may be the type of person who buys things at the end of the season to have for next year--I'm too impatient to do that. I like to find ways to transition my summer clothes into fall.

Today, I'm going to share three looks with you, building upon summer sale items in our shop.  I have paired them with ultra cool pieces from several of our favorite vintage Etsy shops to create new fall looks.  Enjoy (and then go shopping! Vintage/Etsy love)!

Look #1:  Cozy and Cool

We start out with a redesigned (shortened hem) a-line skirt with pockets, a steal at $8.

Pull over a big, cozy sweater (bonus points if it's cashmere, like this one from The Greedy Seagull).

Finish off the look with a pair of lace-up booties.  These granny boots from Blue Butterfly Vintage are the perfect mix of rugged and rock n' roll.

Just add tights (textures and patterns are great for fall)!

Look #2:  Sweet and Retro

Our starting piece her is a red and white striped shell, with a slightly nautical/preppy vibe.  It has and funnel neck and small zipper up the back. The perfect building block for $9.

One of our favorite looks for fall is the circle skirt--so I was thrilled to find this red one in the shop Jewels4Pandas.

And what makes a better brisk weather companion to a circle skirt than a sweet beaded cardigan?  Love the feminine details of this sweater from Raleigh Vintage.

And to finish off this ultra girly look, who could resist a pair of nude peeptoes...with a bow...by Ferragamo?  This pair from cocovintages is to die for.

Look #3:  Bohemian Babe

This embroidered tunic dress was a summer favorite, but now that summer is gone, we have to figure out a way to style it.

I would keep warm in this caramel colored leather jacket from Maefair Vintage.  I am majorly lusting over this jacket because you could pair it with almost anything in your fall wardrobe!

And no fall fashion post from me would be complete without a pair of my favorite fall trend:  clogs!  This amazing vintage pair comes from kaledioscopevision and is a true deal for $28 (size 7, ladies!)

Fall is my absolute favorite season for fashion--boots, sweaters, blazers, everything cozy.  I love how easy it is to build on the summer wardrobe with a little creativity (and some layers!)
