{How to Wear} Spring Trends: Bringing Back the Seventies

Fashion is cyclical.  So trends are always coming back around.  Lots of trends from the seventies have found their way back on the "it" list here and there.  I remember when flared jeans popped up in stores and magazines, when I was in middle school.  I thought I would NEVER jump on that bandwagon!  "Ew, bell bottoms!" I proclaimed.  Of course I bought multiple pairs the following year.

Other subtle hints of 70s have been part of our wardrobes for a while, but this season there is a much more exaggerated 70s trend going on.  Here is my take on it:

Not sure what era these vintage pieces actually came from, but most likely they are originally from the 70s...so I suppose just by putting them on, I'm taking part in the trend!  There's a ton of ways to jump on this 70s bandwagon.  Denim.  Fringe.  Maxi skirts/dresses.  I absolutely LOVE the whole high waisted super flared jeans that are becoming more popular.  Floppy hats.  Oversized sunglasses.  Platform sandals.

Pick your favorites and layer them on--the more the better!

Dress Yourself in Etsy Vintage: Rainy Day Edition

I woke up to a dark sky and pouring rain--the kind of weather that makes you want to go right back to bed.  Instead, I got a little inspired and virtually dressed myself in a head to toe vintage outfit to brave the elements.

I took two rain basics (the trench and the on-trend duck boot), mixed patterns, and added a pop of bright yellow, like that first spring dandelion in the yard.

Of course, if it's warm enough, you should wear the trench open since the trench is longer than the skirt--don't want people thinking you ain't got nothin' underneath that overcoat/and it's all a show. (Name that tune!) I think I might add some textured tights/leggings or knee socks to complete this look.  Then: I'd grab a friend and go puddle jumping!  Followed by a coffee date to warm up and dry off. See?  Rain's not so bad after all...

Dress Yourself in Etsy Vintage

Another lovely day to "window" shop on Etsy.  Today, I planned the outfit from the bottom up.  I am craving a pair of good ol' campus boots to wear with spring dresses (on the days when my pedicure is looking less-than-stellar).  What came about was this very bohemian look with a mix of 60s and 70s pieces from some of my favorite Etsy shops--and a few new ones I discovered!

I'm definitely a bohemian girl at heart (with a bit of an edge--no flower child here), but even if you're not, any one of these pieces is versatile enough to add to your wardrobe and style in a way that suits your own fashion tastes.

St. Patty's Day Preview

Today is what our town calls 'State Patty's Day' (it's a play on words because we live in State College, PA).  The day was created by Penn State students in protest to missing out on one of their many binge drinking holidays-Saint Patrick's Day, when it happened to fall during Spring Break one year.  So this Saturday the streets of downtown will be cluttered with drunken 20-somethings in skimpy green outfits.  [okay, so I have partaken in the holiday before....so I should bite my sarcastic tongue...]
The good news?  The REAL Saint Patrick's Day isn't for another couple of weeks, so there's still time to snatch up some of our vintage lovelies if you're in the mood to be festive and wear green!  Here's a preview of some items we'll be adding to the shop this weekend:

Dress Yourself in Etsy Vintage

I'm trying a new little feature on the blog...since I'm obsessed with Etsy shopping (window shopping mostly, since I would have to file for bankruptcy if I bought everything I wanted), I thought that maybe once a week I'd put together an outfit based 100% on Etsy pieces that I love.  Here's my first look--it's pretty girly, a little gothic/romantic, definitely a cute date night outfit.  What do you think?

Something really fun about this outfit is that the pieces are pulled from so many different decades:  the skirt is 50s, belt is 60s, heels are 70s and sweater is 80s.  Yet it all goes together!  More proof that with clothing styles, what goes around comes around.  That's why a lot of people also have trouble dating vintage Etsy items unless they are clearly labeled. Some pieces are so classic they could fit in most decades.  These are the pieces I'm trying to collect for my own wardrobe (some great knee high boots, a pair of amazing heels, a full or pencil black skirt, strappy sandals, a trench coat, a bomber jacket, a floral dress, a plaid button up).  What are your vintage must-haves?

Late Autumn Trends

Turning the clocks back was a huge reminder that fall is slowly dwindling (like the evening light) and winter is approaching.  The good news is that the holidays are coming--food, family, fun, and of course, dressing up.  The bad news:  brrrrr.  You can still look good even with purple lips (looking at you, Jayme) in some of these late fall trends.

1.  Leather Blazers...It's not a moto or bomber jacket.  There isn't any hardware--this is a more feminine look with leather.  Strong shoulders, cropped fit, a softer dark brown instead of black.  Maria Bello's version is so similar to this vintage beauty in the shop!

2.  Black Dress Shorts...It's hard to believe this trend is back.  I remember several pairs of unflattering corduroy and plaid dress shorts I liked to rock in 6th grade.  But the new styles are hip, and comfortable (no worries about flashing!).  You can't go wrong with a classic black and white combo, like the one here on Daisy Lowe--and this pair from the shop!

3.  Luxe Fur (or Faux) Coat...No doubt Catherine Zeta-Jones is wearing the real thing (unless she's a PETA member), but our shop is carrying an animal-free version of a very similar piece.  Still soft and warm and stylish.  Though we here at Miskabelle have to confess our love for actual vintage fur too (it's vintage! it's okay!) The gold buttons add an extra touch of luxury--the perfect holiday coat!

4.  Slouchy Knit Hat...This is one of those trends that seems to stick no matter what the temperature is.  A perfect fix for a flyaway hair day, it's casual and chic.  Lauren Conrad rocks it with a breezy California outfit, but our way is with a cozy wool cape.  The pinkish color will flatter those cold cheeks.

5.  Black and White Print Scarf...Diane Kruger is one of my style icons (but, come on, who can go wrong when you're dressed in Chanel 24/7?).  While her version is most likely Chanel as well, we're also carrying a designer version in vintage by Givenchy.  Classic print, classic colors, classic designer.  This is another versatile piece to wear all year round (head scarf, belt, on your bag, etc.)

Splurge & Steal: Autumn's Arrival

 Autumn is such a huge time for fashion.  I know it's my personal favorite time to shop--there's just something about the transition between seasons that makes me want to completely revamp my wardrobe at this time each year!  This year I'm thinking fun prints, lots of boots, leather bags and of course...all things vintage!  Our shop has some great fall pieces...and prices that allow 3 of our pieces for LESS than the cost of one designer piece.  Here's some of favorite splurges and steals, perfect for your autumn outings:

I have kind of been obsessing over ankle booties this year.  I really want something just like these...but with a wedge (for more stability when walking).  These boots seal the deal for making any fall outfit super put-together looking.

Okay, so it's a bit sexy for coffee with the girls...but if you picture the outfit with the scarf tied in the hair (and the shoes aren't crazy heels or anything), I think it's just enough sass.  And by the way-- that's three designer pieces (Diane Von Furstenburg shoes, Givenchy scarf and Liz Claiborne tunic) for less than a third of the price of ONE!

You can't beat fall fashion!  Such a fun time of year to get dressed up....layers and jackets and scarves and tights....yes, please!  Happy shopping.

Three Looks as the Leaves Fall

We recently announced our 50% off all summer items sale.  You may be the type of person who buys things at the end of the season to have for next year--I'm too impatient to do that. I like to find ways to transition my summer clothes into fall.

Today, I'm going to share three looks with you, building upon summer sale items in our shop.  I have paired them with ultra cool pieces from several of our favorite vintage Etsy shops to create new fall looks.  Enjoy (and then go shopping! Vintage/Etsy love)!

Look #1:  Cozy and Cool

We start out with a redesigned (shortened hem) a-line skirt with pockets, a steal at $8.

Pull over a big, cozy sweater (bonus points if it's cashmere, like this one from The Greedy Seagull).

Finish off the look with a pair of lace-up booties.  These granny boots from Blue Butterfly Vintage are the perfect mix of rugged and rock n' roll.

Just add tights (textures and patterns are great for fall)!

Look #2:  Sweet and Retro

Our starting piece her is a red and white striped shell, with a slightly nautical/preppy vibe.  It has and funnel neck and small zipper up the back. The perfect building block for $9.

One of our favorite looks for fall is the circle skirt--so I was thrilled to find this red one in the shop Jewels4Pandas.

And what makes a better brisk weather companion to a circle skirt than a sweet beaded cardigan?  Love the feminine details of this sweater from Raleigh Vintage.

And to finish off this ultra girly look, who could resist a pair of nude peeptoes...with a bow...by Ferragamo?  This pair from cocovintages is to die for.

Look #3:  Bohemian Babe

This embroidered tunic dress was a summer favorite, but now that summer is gone, we have to figure out a way to style it.

I would keep warm in this caramel colored leather jacket from Maefair Vintage.  I am majorly lusting over this jacket because you could pair it with almost anything in your fall wardrobe!

And no fall fashion post from me would be complete without a pair of my favorite fall trend:  clogs!  This amazing vintage pair comes from kaledioscopevision and is a true deal for $28 (size 7, ladies!)

Fall is my absolute favorite season for fashion--boots, sweaters, blazers, everything cozy.  I love how easy it is to build on the summer wardrobe with a little creativity (and some layers!)
