Outfit Post: Hat Lady

Lately I have been really trying to define my style and pinpoint what I think is me...mostly in my brain and via Pinterest (because honestly, it is STILL cold and I just can't bear to give up my heavy sweaters and sweat pants most days).  I like basics + cool accessories, and an awesome hat is the perfect topper to spice up any boring outfit.  Amanda gave me this vintage wide brim hat when I visited her this past weekend, without even knowing that I have been coveting a similar style hat for a while now.  It is perfect!  Here's how I wore it...

hat: vintage, bag: vintage Coach (for sale in the shop!), sweater: vintage,
scarf: Walmart, belt: vintage, black jeans: Gap, boots: Minnetonka

Lyla in her daddy's hat and hand-me-down everything else...and looking cute as could be!

Andrew called this an "Indiana Jones hat" and Lyla called it a "cowboy hat."  I suppose they're both sort of right?  Either way, I felt great wearing it and can't wait to style it up with a dress once the weather decides to stop being so mean to us!

Outfit Post: Homies

It is BRISK here in Pennsylvania (currently:  13 degrees F).  Yesterday we did not leave the house-- I baked oatmeal/flax/chocolate chip/cranberry cookies and make jambalaya for dinner.  We put Lyla to bed at 8 and then the husband and I curled up on the couch to watch some Boardwalk Empire (we're currently working our way through season 2 via Netflix).  It was bliss!  Today we have a coffee date so we're venturing out into the cold so we're bundling up!  I've got Lyla in her oversized cable knit sweater and I layered some tights under my jeans (though it might be a little counterproductive seeing as the jeans have giant holes in them....).  This is us this morning, at home:

Pre-coffee tea.

It takes a special kind of talent to take an entirely blurry photo..right?!  Kind of cool looking though.

Sloppy jeans and old boots.  Both favorites in my closet.

Wherever you are, I hope you're keeping warm!  We've almost made it through January, so hang in there (I keep telling myself this...)!

Outfit Post: Ya Win Some, Ya Lose Some

Seems as though I have a never-ending pile of clothes, constantly growing, on top of my sewing machine.  Sometimes Often times I can't seem to give up certain pieces, even if I never wear them.  As summer comes to a close I've noticed that pile of clothes is growing.  I have so many things in my closet that I haven't worn all summer that I'm convinced would be daily staples, if tweaked just a bit.  This outfit consists of two of those pieces that I've "fixed". (and I'm really mad I forgot to take "before" photos)

THE WIN:  the top-- LOVE the crochet neckline.  But the swingy silhouette was not only wide, but super long (it used to cover my butt) and I just felt very "maternity" in it.  So I chopped the length.  In turn, a small embroidered bird on the bottom was half chopped off.  So I added these floral pieces--cut from a scrap of vintage fabric.  I love it!

THE LOSS:  the skirt-- remnants of a dress I chopped in half.  Unfortunately when I added the elastic it made the once-full/knee length bottom half a dress into a slightly-too-short-and-tight-for-an-almost-30-year-old skirt.  I might keep it to wear with tights underneath in the winter.  But I definitely changed out of it after these photos were taken!

shirt & skirt:  DIY, lacey cardigan: discount store?, bag: vintage, boots: Minnetonka, necklace: vintage

I'm glad the shirt turned out so well--it definitely gives me motivation to keep working through my pile of fixer uppers.
Do you see potential in you un-worn clothes?  Or do you immediately toss them and just buy something brand new?
