Vintage Meets Modern: Boho Style

This year, we have focused our flea market style and much of the shop on 70s bohemian styles, which we both love, and which are also hugely on-trend right now at modern stores. Spring and summer are the perfect times to bust out maxi dresses, floppy hats, high-waisted jeans, and crochet everything.  It’s also music festival season, and boho styles lend themselves well to outdoor fests because they are both cool and comfortable: what more could you want in an outfit?

Sometimes it's hard to find a good-fitting vintage piece, especially for curvier ladies! One way to get around this is to buy a vintage-style modern piece, like a maxi dress, and then pair it with vintage accessories:

The style of this printed maxi dress from rue21 is a steal! It’s flattering on every figure and super breezy for summer. We'd pair it with an orange suede vest (worn open), tooled leather belt, knee high lace up boots with a wooden heel and a funky fringed patchwork bag--all vintage!

70s styles are all the rage right now and it's easy for anyone to pull off these retro looks by mixing modern and vintage pieces.

Other easy trends for summer (and festival season!):

-palazzo pants, paired with a cropped tank, long vest, and lots of jewelry.

-jumpsuits, belted with a pair of strappy leather sandals and tons of bracelets and rings.

-floppy hats as a topper for just about any bohemian outfit (and they double as sunscreen!)

Take your modern styles and mix them up with vintage! Your wardrobe will thank you for it.

Modern Vintage, v.1

 

As Amanda talked about in yesterday's post, the one downfall of vintage is that you can't always find exactly what you want in the size you need (or color, or length, or pristine condition, etc.).  In those tough times (#firstworldproblems) we turn to modern day shops' vintage inspired pieces.   I suppose you could call them replicas.  The idea is vintage but the fabric itself is new.  And with a point and a click you can purchase the new version of your dream thrift find.  Otherwise known as modern vintage.

Here are three outfits, each based around a day dress, each from a different decade....pieces that we would daydream of finding at the thrift store but are willing to settle for the modern day knock offs because they are just that pretty.  Oh, and even when we're not shopping thrift stores we're still thrifty.  All pieces are under $50!!

Outfit Post: A Casual Friday in 1970

This is one of my favorite outfit posts in all of blog history...the individual vintage pieces are awesome in and of themselves, but the way it all came together made me feel so 70s chic, and to top it off, it is super comfortable. I could wear this out to dinner with friends or to go to the post office with Aurora. It's casual with a little bit of oomph courtesy of the vintage pieces.

I wore this camel jacket,etc. to run some Friday errands and then have a casual night in with Q. We made dinner together and watched The African Queen (1951)...maybe Love Story (1970) would have been a more appropriate film decade-wise, but this was my first Humphrey Bogart film, and I really loved it. Our veggie burger-and-oven-fries dinner wasn't too shabby either. Sometimes a Friday night at home is just what I need!

I love how a blazer and a few accessories can makes jeans and a tee look totally put together. I think these are my new wardrobe staples! Now, if only I could find some more sweet vintage tees. They are seriously rare at the thrifts (around here, at least)! I believe I found this one somewhere in South Carolina on a spring break, once upon a time. Maybe I'll find some on my 30th birthday road trip? (More on that later...)
