Outfit Post: The Crooked Hearts

It was a dark and rainy night when The Crooked Hearts first set foot on a coffee shop "stage" in Virginia. It was their first time playing in front of an audience (with microphones) at a very quiet open mic...

A little back story:  I have always loved to sing and grew up singing in choir and voice. I wanted to be part of a band, but I can only play a handful of instruments pitifully (guitar, piano, trumpet), definitely not enough to perform in front of a crowd. My voice is my main instrument. So I tried out for some bands (and yes, there were several that didn't work out), but then met my dear friend Jason and we formed our little duo called The Crooked Hearts. It's been a little dream of mine, way before Aurora, to be in a band and I almost gave up on it--but I'm so glad I didn't.  Even if it's silly to some people--for me, it's an important creative outlet that has made me a happier, more fulfilled person.

We've been practicing together weekly (mostly covers, although we have one original, which we also performed on Saturday night), and Saturday night was our first little show. Little place, little audience, a little nervous.

We had a lot of fun, and it was great practice for the future. I had my two biggest fans there, making me smile, and that was the best part for me. It was our first show, which is kind of a big deal, but it was also an open mic/kind of informal. Of course, I never miss an opportunity to get dressed up...

Outfit details (Aurora was VERY excited about the show!): dress-Target (thrifted), belt-vintage, nude fishnets-random, boots-Frye, necklace/bracelets-gifts

A few shots of the night-Jason warming up; my two biggest fans; on stage (excuse the bad lighting/photo quality)

So our first "show" is out of the way! We are excited for future shows and working on more original songs.  I teased Jason all week: "But the real question is...what are you wearing?"  haha.  He cleaned up pretty nice too, as did my handsome husband in his vintage Levi's camp shirt. Swoon.

We had Jason and his awesome wife, Jenny over to our house for drinks afterwards, very low key.  It made an already pretty great night just perfect.  Q planned it all out and even cleaned the house, as though he expected a throng of adoring fans at the show who would be stoked about an afterparty.  I love his confidence in me--he's the absolute best! He takes care of Aurora when I have practice and he encourages me 100% in everything creative that I do.  So, of course, I'm working on a love song for him--it's only right.

xo,
Amanda

  1. Wow, thanks for this. I feel the same about music- sort of silly, but it never stops me from always wanting to do it... :) Great job!

  2. Oh, I'm so proud of you (and a little envious!). I did some singing years ago but haven't done anything on stage in forever, and sometimes I still dream of doing it again. I sing all the time at home and in the car, though, and my pets and daughter are the best audience ever. The other day in the car, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" came on, and I was singing along, and my baby started piping in with her own sounds. She sings along with me frequently, and it makes my heart overflow!

I love the band name. And you look gorgeous and right at home behind that mic. When can we see and hear a sample??? Please, pretty please???
