How To: Style A Long Pony Tail from Short Hair

First off:  please forgive me if this "how to" is more like a "duh...obviously" kind of post.

When I cut off my long hair I quickly realized that up-do's had previously been my go-to hairstyle.  I felt lost each morning when getting ready.  What the heck was I to do with my hair if I couldn't fit it in even a small pony tail?  I tried doing the half-up thing and one day when I was feeling annoyed with the short, straggly hairs still hanging down, I decided to give them their own little pony tail.  Not intending for the outcome that was:  THE DISCOVERY OF HOW TO MAKE A LONG PONY TAIL FROM SHORT HAIR.  (when it comes to hair I never fail at being very dramatic)

Here's are the simple steps:
one:  put half of your hair in a pony tail.
two:  put the remaining hair in a pony tail.
three: tug the top pony (fluff it a bit, give it some volume...).
four:  tug the bottom pony (fluff it a bit, give it some volume...).

I know what you're thinking:  So like, the 80s style double pony tail?  And the answer is kind of, yes.  But the trick is:  leave your hair "wavy" aka (for me) messy/unbrushed.  You have to kind of pull the top pony tail around the bottom one, being sure to cover the bottom elastic.

Here is my before:

And here's how it turns out:

You're welcome.

  1. WHOA!! What?! That is freakin awesome! I'm sort of stunned right now. And I'm pinning this. I've been toying with the idea of cutting my long hair, probably because Kam did, and I always have to copy everything she does. I try to resist and end up doing it anyway. If I do, this will be of so much use to me. So smart!! Oh, and I get missing your long hair, but I still do think this style really works for you.

  2. I do this to my hair too but sadly I don't get them all. I often support them with pins to fix them together. I love short hairs but I sometimes get annoyed when it reaches the length that is somewhere between long and short. hair cutting classes

  4. I also have a short hair and I buy wigs to fake a ponytail. It gives me more options to play with my hair but this idea is simple yet brilliant too.
