Celebrity Looks for Less: Elizabeth Olsen

Can someone please just wave a magic wand and make me look like Elizabeth Olsen...please?
I must admit, I have always had a girl crush on Mary-Kate and Ashley (ever since I had the singalong video they put out and would belt along to songs like "Peanut Butter and Jelly" and "I Wanna Be President"--when I was probably too old to be watching it...). But their sister Elizabeth? Be still my heart. Not only is she gorgeous, but her style is more that of a "real girl" (unlike her sisters' over-the-top, wearing everything but the kitchen sink signature looks). She definitely has that "vintage" feel to her (designer) outfits. Some of which are reminiscent to pieces from our shop! Take a look:

This ivory dress is from her sisters' line, The Row. Not sure about the choice of footwear...but other than that? PERFECTION. The dress from our shop is sleeveless but has that same cropped top overlay and delicate beading.

Girly pleated skirt, and menswear blazer? Seems like a mismatch but looks pretty darn amazing together. The skirt from our shop is silk, with a quirky print (and while it's not in the blue color scheme of Elizabeth's, I could totally see her wearing it).

Ok. Now that I've embarrassed myself with all this swooning (and the admission of my penchant for Mary-Kate and Ashley singalong videos), I will wish you all a happy weekend! Help Me Choose! Road Trip Shoes

My sweet husband had a very ambitious idea for an east coast road trip for my 30th birthday. We had to tone it down a bit (two cities, 3 days), but it is still going to be a huge adventure, including, of course, thrifting and vegan foods! Also: a lot of walking and exploring. As a self-professed lover of heels, the only flats in my closet are my running shoes, a pair of Converse and some boots. I want something comfy and easy to take on and off...so I can put my feet up on the dashboard while we belt out duets (oh yes we did).

Outfit Post: Checkmate

I love bright colors, and neutrals in the brown family, but my go-to color is black. Not just because it's slimming, but it's just classic and a little sexy and a little rock and roll. Black is my comfort zone, especially when I'm throwing something on to run errands, etc. This is what I wore to hit up the party store, as we have two VERY big birthdays coming up in the next week!

I have been living in my thrifted black Banana Republic skinnies, and I found this buffalo plaid shirt at the thrift last week that has become a new wardrobe staple! It's a warm winter here in VA, but you still need a jacket. I thrifted this green coat (it's like a big, soft sweatshirt AND the hood is removeable!) that will be great for spring too.

There are many dressy outfits in the works for birthday festivities and roadtrips, but this is a just a little peek at my day-to-day, work-at-home casual wear.

Outfit Post: Purple

I was in the mood to wear a skirt this weekend, however, we were going to get our taxes done and I feel like all my skirts were too short and flirty for such a serious occasion. So I pulled out a dress of a more appropriate length and topped it with my favorite vintage sweater. Both purple, yes. But do they look great together? Not quite. But alas, we had an appointment to get to and I was stuck.
To redeem the look, I decided to forgo the usual foliage-in-our-yard backdrop and find something cooler. This old blue building did the trick. Here I am in various stages of coat-on and closed, coat-open, coat-off.

Hey, squinty eyes.

Pet peeve: people who constantly pose with their hand on their hip (because yes, we get it, it does make
your arm look thinner). I promise, I am just trying to show off my awesome ring here.

The face I make when I start to feel awkward that my husband is taking photos of me in front
of a random building (that I think was a locksmith or something).

Funny thing is...now looking at these photos, that dress isn't even all that long. So yeah, I'm really glad I didn't wear any of my skirts that are even shorter. Adding to my list of things to look for next time I'm thrifting: tax-appropriate length skirts.

Shop Preview: Favorite Finds

Any avid thrifter will tell you that part of the joy of thrifting is the thrill of the chase. Some days you will come home empty handed, others you will have two trash bags full of goodies. Recently, for me, I have been unearthing one or two great pieces at a time. These pieces were all found in the same 1 week period at different shops, but they are 4 of my most beloved finds in recent memory.

The Details: 1950s cropped mustard sweater, 1960s tweed cape with faux fur trim, 1950s floral wiggle dress, 1960s cheetah print abstract maxi dress

It was was a gorgeous day, but the lighting is a little dark...will fix that right up before posting this beauties into the shop next week! Off to wrap and post a few more.

Outfit Post: Fancy Pants

I almost called this post "Wallflower". I didn't realize how much I match the wall until I uploaded them onto my computer. I think it looks kind of cool--very Zach Braff in Garden State (you know, that scene where he matches the bathroom wallpaper?). But the real stand out in this outfit are the ah-mazing pants. A gift from Amanda (of course). I should've got a close up shot--they are almost like a thick lace material. Sheer, with little booty shorts sewn in (though, I wore tights underneath to make them a little less risque). I love the exaggerated shape of them.

Ew, my face here. I wasn't intending to look so model-y, I think I was just

caught off guard when the camera went off!

I went the obvious route, pairing the gray pants with other shades of black and gray. The red lip was a necessity to add SOME sort of color. Oh, and I guess this little gal helped add a pop of color to my outfit too:

I couldn't get that purse out of her tiny baby death grip.

Not sure how else to style these pants. How would you wear them?

Outfit Post: A Casual Friday in 1970

This is one of my favorite outfit posts in all of blog history...the individual vintage pieces are awesome in and of themselves, but the way it all came together made me feel so 70s chic, and to top it off, it is super comfortable. I could wear this out to dinner with friends or to go to the post office with Aurora. It's casual with a little bit of oomph courtesy of the vintage pieces.

I wore this camel jacket,etc. to run some Friday errands and then have a casual night in with Q. We made dinner together and watched The African Queen (1951)...maybe Love Story (1970) would have been a more appropriate film decade-wise, but this was my first Humphrey Bogart film, and I really loved it. Our veggie burger-and-oven-fries dinner wasn't too shabby either. Sometimes a Friday night at home is just what I need!

I love how a blazer and a few accessories can makes jeans and a tee look totally put together. I think these are my new wardrobe staples! Now, if only I could find some more sweet vintage tees. They are seriously rare at the thrifts (around here, at least)! I believe I found this one somewhere in South Carolina on a spring break, once upon a time. Maybe I'll find some on my 30th birthday road trip? (More on that later...)

Small Business Love Sunday

Jayme and I love being our own bosses and controlling every aspect of our shop. Running our own small business has given us a great appreciation for other small businesses, especially vintage and handmade! I wanted to bring some of that love to the blog in a new little Sunday feature...

Jayme gave me an adorable knit turban headband as an early Christmas gift...I wear it half the week! It is the perfect way to dress up a messy undo or disguise roots. When I saw this bright knit bow headband in my friend Mel's shop, I had to have it! Mel (of blog Une Vie Geniale) knits beautiful little pieces--great for gifts and really reasonably priced. My headband was even more beautiful in person and so soft! I wore it all weekend.

Splurge and Steal: Cozy Night In

We have been running around so much the past few weekends--tonight, I am making dinner (roasted veggies on salad with a vinaigrette with a nice glass of Riesling!) and Q and I are going to hang out, maybe watch a movie. I can't wait!

Are you having a night in with someone special? Here is a fun Splurge and Steal look that would also work for a casual night out (say, Thai food and an early showing of The Descendants...which Q and I liked well enough, but not as a best picture Golden Globe).

Outfit Post: Invisible Riverside

It was a great Christmas here at our house--probably the best ever. Mostly because we had so much family down time and because Aurora was so excited about everything, since she was finally aware of all the special holiday things.

The gifts were just icing on the cake: Q surprised me with an iPad (I cried!) and I got him (well, US) tickets to see Ryan Adams. The great thing about concert tickets is that the show wasn't until January, so it spread out our celebrating a little further, and made for an awesome date night to break up the winter blahs!

For some reason, the outfit pics were really blurry except for this one--and I had closed eyes in the other clear pic--but Q looks quite handsome, so I guess this is a husband/wife outfit post! This is what we wore to see one of our favorite singer/songwriters:

Details---> On Amanda: sweater-Anthropologie (thrifted!), dress-Old Navy, belt-vintage, tights-Target, boots-Steve Madden (thrifted) On Quentin: western button up-thrifted, jeans-Levi's, shoes-no idea.

The show was pretty lowkey, since it was just Ryan and no band. The opener, Jason Isbell (of the Driveby Truckers) was fantastic, and the encores where the two of them sang together were probably the highlight of the show. Ryan, I'm pretty sure, was wearing a vintage tee and jacket. (Swoon, disregarding his horrible, horrible hair.)

But onto the outfit! I have been wanting a beautiful long sweater, and I lucked out with this Anthropologie find at my thrift. I also have been wanting brown riding boots, and lo and behold, last week I found these babies in my size at the thrift. I love how this outfit came together, with the brown and black accented with ivory.

It's Thursday! I am ready for another weekend....

Celebrity Looks for Less: The Long and Short of It

I feel like maxi skirts and dresses seem so easy for summer months. Pair with sandals and you're done. But I haven't ever tried anything floor length during the winter...because I was confused as to HOW. In my search for answers I came up with one conclusion--pair the long with the short (so, the opposite of what Cake had in mind*)--a maxi dress/skirt looks adorable under a cropped jacket. Here's how the celebs do it (Rachel Bilson just happened to end up being both my examples because she, is like, the queen of all things maxi--eh, maybe I shouldn't word it that way? ha.) and how YOU can do it too, using pieces from the Miskabelle shop!

I think both these looks would work with black boots hidden underneath.

Outfit Post: Baby Got Back

I had to indulge myself with the title of this blog. And while I have plenty of junk in the trunk and know every word to Sir Mixalot's booty anthem, this outfit does not pay homage to my derriere, but actual back.

If you follow any fashionista-type people on Pinterest, you may have seen this outfit posted as inspiration last week. I have this low back sweater and was inspired to create my own look, with a more Bohemian vibe.

Of course, it was freeeeezing outside, so we started with the trench, which I then threw over to my husband/photographer and shouted "Hurry up!" all while trying to remain pretty. And, of course, no photo shoot is complete without my little sidekick trying to get in on the action.

I think a low back is almost as sexy as showing cleavage, if not MORE sexy...what do you think?

Shop Preview: Lacey Bits

Today I photographed some new items for the shop-- a couple pairs of shoes, a few sweaters and some other odds and ends, all of which had one thing in common: lace. There's something so romantic and feminine about lace, I find my eyes being drawn to it any time I'm shopping for vintage. I know it's not the most practical thing for your everyday winter wardrobe, but I think these pieces are certainly Valentine's Day worthy, right?

Something Pretty

I have quite the collection of lightweight vintage scarves. I can't help but snatch up a pretty (or quirky) print when it catches my eye at the thrift store and I was also recently passed down some extra pretty scarves from Andrew's late grandmother. Mostly they just sit in a box along with all the other Miskabelle inventory. Occasionally I'll post a few for sale in the shop. And on a rare occasion I actually wear one (usually tied on my purse strap).

How fun is that dog print scarf?? It is fairly small and square and I had planned on using it as part of a table setting for Lyla's first birthday party (it was going to be "cats and dogs" theme).

I love seeing the mishmash of different prints together--all equally pretty. Maybe I need to make more of an effort to wear these scarves, perhaps my new 'signature' accessory this spring?

Splurge and Steal: Warm Texture

It has been a while since we have had a splurge and steal up on the blog...so just to refresh your memory, we create an outfit from 3 to 4 pieces from the shop (steals) and one pricier or designer piece (splurge) that completes the look. Typically, our entire Miskabelle look will come in under the price of the one splurge.

This week's look is a cozy casual or work look pulling from several decades:

The cape is very 70s Bohemian and in excellent condition (wear it over a pretty floral, striped or polka dot blouse!). Add 1950s wool pants (never worn), rolled up with some cute, warm socks tucked into these fantastic boots. There is nothing like pair of women's comfort shoes like these Bellatrix Canoe Hiker Boots from Born! They are so chic AND warm AND kind to your feet for those long walks in the freezing cold. Finally, you can tote everything you need in this great oversized business tote/bag. We love the blend of masculine and feminine in this look--the cape is soft and the boots and pants are a little tough: that's our kind of girl!

Outfit Post: Time for Sweaters

Not only were sweaters NECESSARY this past weekend, so were indoor photos (brrrrrr)! I let Lyla in on the photo shoot too--she was rocking the cutest vintage sweater, after all.

I'm wearing: old sweater (not vintage...just old), handmade headband, Rachel Roy velvet tunic (a gift from Amanda!), H&M belt, vintage boots

I am one of those people who is always cold. So chances are I'm either wearing some kind of cardigan over my outfit, or if not, I have one with me in my bag. I would love to see this tunic (it has a pocket on the front too, like a fancy version of an old man's pocket tee) with bare legs, sky high heels (and no cardigan)...but I couldn't resist wearing it now with my go-to winter layers (sweater, leggings, boots). Now that I see these photos I realize I dress Lyla in that same style--black leggings, warm boots and a sweater. She's like, waaaaay cuter than me though.

Celebrity Looks for Less: Jackets

Oh yes, we've reached that point of the year where the holidays are over and summer is nowhere in sight and all I want to do is curl up on the sofa with a mug of hot tea/coffee/cocoa. Which means, when I actually do get dressed I only have eyes for things that will keep me WARM.

Outfit Post: Reds

Red lips are still my favorite little indulgence. They make me feel a little vintage-y, even if my outfit is not. They are so glamorous! When I wear something red, I can't help but put on my favorite lipstick.

This is another cozy outfit for winter--I have been living in these Gap jeans (thanks, Jayme!) with boots and sweaters and of course, my favorite scarf. I found this sweater while thrifting this week, and may hoard it for myself at least a little while.

Outfit Post: Thrifty Finds

My first outfit post of the new year consists of two of my favorite thrifted finds. One is vintage, one is not and both were found for me by Amanda.

Let's talk vintage first.
Who doesn't LOVE finding the perfect vintage western snap front shirt? In my experience they are usually too big (men's sizes) or too.....western. This one fits to perfection and has just the right amount of 70s cowboy appeal. I wish you could see more of it in the photos but I decided to go a little Cher Horowitz (is anyone keeping track of how many 1990's movies/TV shows I've referenced on this blog?*) and pair it with a cropped vneck sweater. I wish the proportions were a little more exaggerated (like with really long shirt tails).

Next up, the non-vintage, thrift find of the century: Frye Villager boots, Amanda bought FOR $3.50!
Frye makes THE best boots and I have been coveting a pair ever since I can remember. Did I mention, I have the best sister ever?

Outfit Post: Cold Comfort

Things I like to do when it's cold outside:
-sleep late
-bake cookies
-wear wool socks
-make vegan macaroni and cheese every day for lunch
-snuggle with my sweetie in the evenings while watching Netflix marathons of ridiculous shows, like Glee
-throw on a big chunky sweater, jeans and a scarf and call it a day.

Winter has really hit Virginia, but it wasn't too cold to get in a few outfit shots, the first of the new year! I'm wearing a sweater and booties that will both be coming to the shop soon.

It's pretty casual and in hindsight, an oversized sweater (It is a turquoise and ivory swirl in chunky knit, which is hard to tell from these photos) is not so flattering on my in-hibernation body, but I wanted to jump back into the habit of wearing vintage and taking outfit posts. Well, really, actually getting dressed, drying my hair, and putting on makeup is truly an improvement. I forget that it actually makes you feel good!

Eco-Friendly Packaging

When we first opened our etsy shop we reveled in sending out pretty packages--pink and green tissue paper sealed with a personalized sticker, placed in a box (often stuffed with MORE colorful tissue paper), then neatly wrapped in brown paper. And while we love the idea of our customers opening a lush box of pretty paper to reveal their vintage treat, it doesn't make much sense to promote eco-friendly clothing and accessories (a.k.a. VINTAGE) and then sacrifice a small forest to send it through the mail.

Enter: new, environmentally-friendly packaging. Simple recycled-paper hang tags, stamped with our logo, attached to the garment with string, then wrapped in brown paper (or a re-used box for shoes/bags) and stamped with our address! Simple. Pretty. Green.

Still working on perfecting my stamp-skills!

These pretties went out to post yesterday. We're sure their new owners will love them with or without the bells and whistles of layers upon layers of unnecessary packaging.

New Year, New Us!

I'm not one to keep/make resolutions in the new year (we all know how those turn out), but I do like to make some changes when January 1st rolls around, for myself and my family. Over Christmas, Jayme and I talked about how we could improve our shops/blogs, and the answer we finally came up with was this: simplify. So....er....simple. We have two vintage shops and two blogs (on top of working other part time jobs, being mamas to two awesome little girls and wives to two awesome dudes), and it was starting to get overwhelming.

For 2012, we've decided to combine--Miskabelle will now feature a section devoted entirely to vintage kiddo clothes and another section devoted to vintage maternity wear. No boring fillers, just awesome vintage in excellent condition. The Miskabelly blog, while it's been fun and has introduced us to many lovely women through the web, will be no more. Our focus will now be on making this a vintage lifestyle blog, which, very loosely, just means we'll be sharing things we love (occasional pics of our babies in vintage outfits, shop updates, outfit posts, house tours, etc.), with a specific focus on our Etsy shop and shopping for vintage. This business is our baby and we want to make it the best it can be.

That also means you probably won't be reading many personal posts about losing weight, breastfeeding woes, etc. Not that we won't be real--because we always are--but our central focus will be on our love of pretty vintage things. We're hoping to share more about thrifting experiences (some of which have been AWESOME), cooking vegan/gluten-free foods, being sisters, and about our creative lives outside of blogging/Etsy-ing (as a writer and visual artist!). So, in many ways, you'll get to know us even better. ;)

We also have some fun little changes to share with our shop, first and foremost being our updated, totally eco-friendly packaging (sneak peek coming to the blog this week!).

We hope you'll stay...or if you're just joining us, come along for the ride!

Sabine Gets Dressed: Pretty Cozy

I love the word cozy (except when it's used in conjunction with the word "beer" as in "beer cozy") because I love that cozy feeling when you put on a great winter outfit. I dressed up Sabine in one of my favorite recent vintage finds (coming soon to the shop!). This is a great casual holiday look with a little bit of vintage flair.

I wear a lot of black with a pop of color, especially around the holidays, for formal events, but I'm always drawn to browns and winter whites for everyday wear. I love how this look is both a little preppy (structured bag and tassle flats) and a little bohemian (crochet/lace)--two completely opposite styles! But I think they pair up beautifully.

Celeb Inspired Holiday-Wear

The one thing I really envy about celebrities is that they have the chance to get truly dressed up on a regular basis. They have the chance to choose from a sea of designer clothing and experiment with hair and makeup till their heart's content. What I love about the holidays is that it is time of year when us 'regular folk' have an excuse to get gussied up. But....most of us don't have a "designer budget". Outfit Post: Fancy Blouse

I have a confession: I am wearing leggings as pants. In my defense, my sweater is extra long in the back so nothing naughty is being exposed. I love pairing casual pieces with a fancy blouse. This blouse could be tucked in and the necktie tied tighter, but then it wouldn't make sense for my super casual wardrobe. So I wore it untucked with the leggings, tough boots and an oversized sweater...I feel totally myself. (That along with the fact that I have a PONY TAIL in! Finally!)

The blouse is vintage and everything else is old or unknown (I guess I don't see the point in labeling brands because it's not like you could go out and buy any of it!). Also, I'm wearing my husband's watch. It was by accident--he asked me to hold it for him while he was cleaning out my parents' gutters and I put it on and forgot I was wearing it. Looks pretty cute though...may have to "borrow" it again!

It's finally feeling super-wintry here. By that I mean, miserably cold (that's why these pics were taken indoors). I'm hoping this cold weather will put me more in the holiday spirit...perhaps I should trade in my pink, chiffon blouse for a red turtleneck sweater or something?

Now Channeling: Felicity

Vintage Inspired Holiday Makeup

I am definitely a makeup-everyday type of girl. I don’t leave home without first putting on under-eye concealer, blush, and mascara. Nothing crazy. But on special occasions I jump at the chance to do a full-face of makeup. My go-to extras are [light] bronzer, eyeliner and a tinted lip gloss. For the holidays (ie. My husband's annual work Christmas party), I wanted to try something a little different. The obvious solution was a bright red lip (festive and very vintage/50s housewife/pin up girl). But I’ve done it before. So I decided to focus less on lips and more on eyes. What I had in mind was a 60s, Twiggy-inspired look: heavy upper lid (only) liner and lots of mascara on both upper and lower lashes.

Funny, because I thought this was so bold—but once photographed, it looks so subtle! I stuck with a nude eye shadow with just a liiiitle sparkle, to define the liner, which I like…but next time I need to go a LOT thicker on the liner.

I feel like I picture Twiggy with a very matte face, no color. But blush is something that is very close to my heart. It was the first makeup I used and I love the little punch of brightness it adds to my face. I NEVER skip blush. Sometimes I go a bit overboard with it, I must admit. But if a little blush looks pretty, a lot of blush must be even prettier….right??

A pretty, glossy lip finishes off the look. I tried this look with a pale lip gloss, but I just wasn’t digging the nude-ish lip (my lips aren’t all that full, so it almost makes them disappear on my face). So instead, I went with a rosy gloss.

I don’t paint my nails very often these days. Taking care of an almost-one year old makes it hard to find the time (I can usually get them painted, but I end up smudging them because I don’t have time to let them dry). So while I would love to have a classic red nail for the holidays, I chose to instead go with nude nails. Not only is it pretty—but also much easier to hide imperfections!

I actually really like my whole nude eyes/nails against the black dress and jewelry. It’s so easy to fall into the red-everything for the holidays…I dare you to try something different! Subtlety is sometimes a lovely thing.

Pink and Red

Oh, right...I said I would show my revised hair color. I guess I've kind of been in hiding for the past week, trying to focus less on comparing myself to other people (mainly on the internet...mainly bloggers...why are you all so cute and pretty and stylish??) and take a little break from the nerve wracking task of posting photos of myself on the internet.
Here is my red hair. I have never been a fan of red hair. And yet, I decided to dye my hair red. And as expected, I don't like it all that much. But my hair needs a rest, so I'm waiting to do anything else for a couple of weeks (omg...how many times can one person type "hair"?! how sick are you of reading about my stupid hair??).
I feel a bit Pink Ladies (from Grease) in this outfit. The pants feel high-waisted on, but in the photos they don't look all that high waisted. But the hot pink cardigan and leather jacket are very end-of-the-movie-Sandy, don't you think? Not to mention the big, curled hair (dang. said the H-word again.)

Outfit Post: First Thanksgiving

If this was the First Thanksgiving, I would obviously be in pilgrim garb, but this title is really about the fact that I get to have two Thanksgivings this year, one with Q's family (this past weekend) and one with my family (tomorrow!!! eeeee!). We had an amazing time on Sunday, catching up with Q's siblings and sharing lots and lots of food. We brought several vegan dishes, including or mac and cheese, which is a family favorite.

Of course, since I work from home, I take up any occasion to dress up. This is what I wore for my First Thanksgiving this year:

Details: skirt, belt, blouse, blazer and brooch: vintage, booties-thrifted AE, tights-random

Oh, the food: Harvest Fruit Crumble, Maple Crusted Tofu, and Vegan Mac and Cheese.

I decided to take fall colors in stride with this outfit (mustard, beige tweed, chocolate brown). I have been living in the skirt (cotton with an elastic waist=perfect for an expanding stomach). The temperature was warmer than expected, and once we all filled the house, along with the hot stove blasting, I had to take off the blazer.

It was a wonderful day of family, food, and thankfulness. And I can't WAIT to do it again tomorrow with more of the people I love! Also...in a new outfit. :)Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours--we are grateful for our customers, readers, family, and friends!

Outfit Post: Ombre

I am in the midst of a hair identity crisis. After chopping off my long locks in September, I no longer felt like myself...I felt like that "mom" stereotype that I always told myself I wouldn't fall into. You know? Those women you always see on makeover shows, that cut off their hair and refuse to wear anything but sweatpants after they've had a baby. In an attempt to appease my restless, hair-hating self, I decided to jump on the ombre bandwagon (I know, I'm like, a year late on this). Turns out, despite what all the youtube tutorials said, it is NOT super easy to get the look on your own. I ended up with orange ends that were not quite faded into my dark hair, but had a distinct line where the hair dye had been applied. Damnit. After a week of going back and forth about whether I liked it or not (in some lighting it was ok, and I would tell myself "it's kind of edgy and cool!") I bought a box of dye (color to be revealed in another outfit post this week) and erased my ombre hair. I'm not super excited about the new hair color either. So pretty much, I am wishing for a time machine right about now.

BUT, I did take pictures of my ombre hair, while wearing this ombred sweater.

Sabine Gets Dressed: Cozy Thanksgiving

The air has gotten cold just in time for Thanksgiving. We are having our first family Thanksgiving with Q's side this weekend and our "real" Thanksgiving with my family next week. So I actually need to consider TWO outfits to wear.

What are you wearing to dinner? I know a lot of people want elastic waists and stretchy fabric, but maybe something structured will keep me from overeating! Take some inspiration from Sabine:

Shop Preview: I've Got This Friend

I love reconnecting with friends after many years and finding it's almost like no time has passed at all. I caught up with an old friend who lived in the same building as me in when I was in graduate school. She had gotten married and had a beautiful little baby since the last time I saw her, and we had a great morning hanging out with some coffee and (vegan) pumpkin bread. She was excited when I told her about our vintage business because she had acquired some pieces that she wasn't sure what to do with...try to wear them, have them altered, sell them? I offered to help where I could, and she decided she'd like to sell a few pieces. So these lovelies are on their way to the shop:

This peach confection is probably 70s, but it's such a 20s style!/This halter maxi has beautiful crochet panels.

My friend almost used this as her wedding dress. It was handmade/beaded and the top is removeable.

The iridescent shimmer and accordion gathers on this 50s dress are amazing./This top was commissioned and made when her friend (who left my friend the clothes when she passed away) was overseas, with more hand-beading. It would look fabulous with jeans and heels for a holiday party!

Now I just have to measure everything...more items coming to the shop ASAP! Trying to load up before the holiday rush! Don't forget, next week is already Black Friday. Keep an eye out, friends, you just might see a Miskabelle sale code...

***Oh, and the blog title comes from one of my favorite songs on the "Barton Hollow" album by The Civil Wars. Worth a watch! I'm still as in love with this album as I was when I first heard it early this year.

Outfit Post: Woven and Spun

Short sleeved sweaters always seemed like an oxymoron to me. I mean...if it's cold enough outside to wear a sweater, chances are, it's too cold to have bare arms. But the other day, after getting dressed, I perused the Miskabelle studio closet (aka, the closet in the extra bedroom of our house that all the Miskabelle stuff is stored) and found this short sleeve open knit sweater. I threw it on overtop my red thermal and suddenly the whole short-sleeved sweater thing made perfect sense.

Vintage sweater and bag. The rest? A mish mash of pieces I've had

in my closet FOREVER. I honestly don't shop anymore.

I have a feeling I will be throwing on this slouchy sweater a lot this winter. It will add a cool little touch to all my old long sleeved tees.

Outfit Post: Vintage-Free

It's pretty obvious how much I love vintage. I love the history, the prints, the uniqueness (and the prices--most of the time). But even though I adore old clothes and I sell them, I don't wear them every day! I know a lot of vintage sellers do...but I have such eclectic fashion tastes that some days I am feeling more modern...or I don't have the perfect vintage piece to complete a look or complement another outfit. So I resort to (GASP!) modern clothes.

Of course, most of those are thrifted. What can I say? I'm addicted. Here is what I wore for a typical day of errands yesterday: post office, coffee, a walk, and our first bit of Christmas shopping at Target. (I knooooow. But we had a coupon!):

Sabine Gets Dressed: The Glittery Sweater Maxi

I like to put outfits together from our shop, but mostly I'm collaging photos together, so you can't get the best idea of the look on a real body. Of course, my curves don't fit into a lot (okay: MOST) of vintage clothes, nor do my size 8.5 feet (so many cute shoes in a size 6!)

My blog friend Amanda (great name, right?) dresses her shop mannequin, Matilda, and does a little "What Matilda Wore" tweet, and I thought--of course! I should dress up Sabine (my mannequin) in these outfits. One of my favorite consignment shops in DC also blogs an outfit each week, and I love how they include shoes (one of my favorite parts!), so I used that idea to get the head to toe look.

I love metallics for the winter, but adding a pair of patent shoes in neutral colors tones down the outfit enough for daytime. It would also look amazing with a soft black scarf looped around the neck.

You could also pair the dress with tights and boots and a tweed blazer for a totally different look. The oatmeal/gold color scheme is more versatile than you would think!

I'm looking forward to dressing up Sabine in the future...and myself too (maybe even tomorrow!).

Outfit Post: Specs

I've worn glasses since I was in fourth grade. I remember actually being excited when I first found out I needed them. My first pair were bright blue, round, wire frames. I will spare you the flashback photo.
By the time I hit middle school my excitement for my eyewear had turned to disdain. I would beg for contacts at each yearly eye appointment. I finally got them in 10th grade. I felt like a new person.
I could probably count on one hand the amount of times I've worn glasses in public since then.

But I have lusted over a pair of tortoise shell frames since I saw the pair Alicia Silverstone wore in True Crime.

That girl makes even glasses look sexy (not fair!). I could never find a similar pair, but since the wayfarer style has become super popular the past couple years, I finally found some! I even wore them in public once (to the grocery store) in the month that I've had them...haha. Maybe someday I get over my glasses stigma. Until then, here is photo evidence that I do, in fact, own a pair of glasses.

Outfit Post: Hysteric

We had quite an eventful weekend here (Saturday's snow being the LEAST exciting of these events). My stepdaughter's high school had an "American Idol" contest...she made it to the last round, which was Saturday night. She learned to play some guitar chords for both nights to do her songs acoustically (how awesome is that?), and honestly, I should be sharing her outfit here because she looked so great for her final performance (to her dad's dismay).

She didn't become the Idol of the school, but she did an amazing little performance of Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Hysteric." And this is what I wore as part of her fan club... (sorry for the inside photos: blame the snow and the early darkness that comes with it).

I found this jumper/dress at the thrift this week and had to keep it (at least, for now). It would be great as a summer tank dress, but I thought it would look cute with a top underneath and a belt. You can't tell but the top half is thermal and the bottom is a lightweight cotton. I like the contrast of fabrics, as well as the contrast of such a utilitarian fabric, like thermal (so grunge!) with this pinky nude color. I paired it with my tough boots and black accessories so it wasn't too sweet.

Speaking of sweet:

She was excited to pose with me (and even more excited for the SHOW!)

I wore an entirely different costume for Halloween (which I'll share with you all later!). We had a neighborhood block party/celebration yesterday. Thankfully, the snow had melted and the sun came out.

Hope everyone had a fantastic weekend! I'm looking forward to taking Aurora trick or treating for a little bit tonight, and this is the first year in a while that I'll be sad to see this crazy Halloween season end!

This is the first year in a long time that I've been excited for Halloween. We're doing some family costumes for a neighborhood block party/parade and have been working to get our outfits together all week (can't wait to share photos!). I actually can't remember the last time I dressed up! Here are 4 Halloween costumes, just two pieces each, that you could throw on for a last-minute party or to simply hand out Halloween candy from the comfort of your doorway.

Even better? For those of you who want to leave a little to the imagination (unlike most Halloween costumes out there for the ladies), these are all cute, but covered up enough not to get you kicked out of a pumpkin patch.

Cowgirl might be a pretty common costume, but I guarantee most gals will be in short daisy dukes and a plaid western shirt tied at the navel. Stand out from the crowd with a cute square-dancing dress paired with your favorite cowboy boots!

A metallic maxi dress and heavy jewelry create the look of Ancient Greek royalty. Just add some heavy eye makeup and maybe a faux weapon (depending on your favorite goddess of myth!).

The easiest part of this outfit? You can go barefoot! (Although I don't recommend it for walking the streets in temperatures below 50 degrees, like it will be around these parts!). A headband worn over the forehead completes the look.

This dress makes the costume! Pair it with this vintage fascinator, and a pair of opaque black tights and fun black heels (maybe these?). You'll be warm AND look great!

Outfit Post: Plain Jane

Not all outfits are winners. We all have days we just throw on jeans and a top, without much thought (or at least I like to think we all do...). These photos are from a little visit to Virginia to see Amanda last week (actually it was to see Hanson, but I got to see Amanda by default. More on that, on the Miskabelly blog!). I didn't have much time to pack and I had thrown in jeans and a top that I ended up hating. So Amanda gave me this little sweater to wear and keep (score!). My fringy minnetonka boots have been my winter go-to the past two years, and it looks like this year will be the same. Top off my dirty hair with a slouchy hat and throw on my trusty cross body bag and we have the best possible outfit I could come up with despite my lack of good packing skills.

Outfit Post: Channeling Sabina

Sorry for the bit of quiet here on the blog. Jayme and family were in for a couple of days, and we've been working a lot at our *real* jobs. Even the shop updating has been slow. But next week we'll be back on the ball, promise.

I think that some people are hat people, and I am fortunate to be one of those people. It doesn't mean I don't get a little shy (in fact, I opted out of wearing the hat part of this outfit to brunch, but it's a good thing because I may have lost it in the end), but I love hats and own quite a few of them.

Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being is in my top 5 favorite books list. For those who haven't read it, Sabina is one of the primary 4 characters and an artist--as well as many, many other things. The bowler hat (a common image on the cover of many editions of the book) plays a memorable role in one piece of the story and is a pretty powerful symbol...but this is a blog, not a graduate lit paper, so I will just suggest you put it on your reading list, and move on to the photos. (Thanks to Jayme, for taking these lovely shots!)

We went for a brunch/coffee in Arlington and for a walk/shop, and this is what I wore (sans hat this time). I am not sure why I didn't wear the hat...I guess I didn't want to draw too much attention to myself? Also, I was feeling a lot like Demi Lovato and worried the look was a little too "tween-star-post-rehab-comeback." I do plan on wearing the hat again, though...

I went in to my favorite consignment and had some store credit, so I got to make a few purchases--for free! Two girls complimented my outfit, as did the cashier, mistaking my jacket for something much more pricey that they'd been selling in the store a few weeks ago. Bonus. I dress for myself (and of course, the blog), but I certainly do not mind receiving compliments. I actually hadn't worn this nude H&M skirt since I got it in the spring because it felt too breezy without some tights under it. But it's tights weather again, so out it came! I love nude + black together.

I took some photos of Jayme too, but you'll have to wait for next week to see hers. ;) I'm ready to update the shop a little and begin my weekend!

Outfit Post: True Work of Art

Selling vintage and blogging are two things that bring me great joy, but my first love has always been fiction writing. Being a mom with 3 jobs doesn't leave me much quiet time or space (mentally or physically) to write, but occasionally, I write something.

One of my closest friends, Amy, created a little project called Spark, which pairs visual artists (or even composers!) with writers so that they inspire each other and make new work. It is a 10 day project she oraganizes 4 times a year and all artwork and writing ends up on the blog. I have participated several times with Jayme (and my handsome, talented husband even participates as a writer!). It's a great little "spark" with a short word count and a deadline, which is just what I need in this season of my life.

Typically, the work is all displayed online, but there have been several exhibits happening in galleries recently that allow for writers to see the artwork in person. Amy also organizes readings so that we can share the written pieces aloud. Amy is currently doing some awesome things in Portland, OR right now, so she asked me to help facilitate a reading this past Friday in Del Ray (Alexandria, VA). I was thrilled to be a part of the reading, and of course, wanted to "dress the part." This is what I wore:

The exhibit was amazing! My written piece was posted in the center of a wall, surrounded by the artwork it had inspired, as were 5 or 6 other writers' pieces around the gallery. Below is a shot of "my" wall.

We did a moving reading where each writer would stand in front of the wall where the work was hung and read her piece (we happened to all be female!). Some of the artists also attended and shared a little bit about their creation process. It was definitely inspiring!

I went home feeling a little tired (why, oh why did I wear heels?), but mostly re-energized artistically. I miss writing and have been hoping to find some time this week to sit down and work, even a half an hour. It's not the same immediate gratification that blogging is, but the reward for me is definitely greater...I forgot how good it feels to make art.

If you're an artist or writer, I also have to recommend that you try a round of Spark (one round just finished, so it will be a couple of months until the next) to get your creative juices flowing. It's a really amazing project.

Sister Re-style (Part 2)

Typically, our Sister Restyles will probably happen in two different states and we'll share the piece by mail, but Jayme and I were lucky to be in the same city this weekend, so we took her (brilliant!) idea and ran with it.

We style this vintage netted sweater (coming to the shop next week!)--Jayme's look was romantic, and mine was a little tough (as are my facial expressions here. Sheesh.).

I am loving red lips lately, especially against the blonde hair (which is blonder and even better than in these photos, thanks to my personal hairstylist/highlighter who fixed me up on Saturday night!).

Admittedly, I don't love how this sweater fits...it doesn't hug in the best places (cough, baby chub, cough). I like the way it is slouchier, and I think that's how it's meant to be worn. I finally found black jeans (glorified jeggings, but they are comfy and work with everything and they were at H&M, so they were a steal!).

Sister Re-Style (Part 1)

For as long as I can remember, Amanda and I have shared clothes. During my teenage years, when I was still finding my style, it was pretty amazing having a whole other wardrobe to pick through. From Amanda's pale purple Gap halter top I wore on one of my first dates to my hooded khaki Roxy jacket that Amanda would steal when I wasn't home (I still have that jacket, 10 years later!), she and I could always depend on each others clothes as back-up when we needed something fresh and new[ish] to wear. I still raid her closet when we go to visit, looking for a funky jacket or some pretty jewelry to finish off my outfit.

That said, Amanda and I do have different styles. So we thought it would be fun to take some items from the shop and show you how we'd each wear them. First up, a cream colored netted sweater.

Here's my take on it:

sweater- vintage, dress- H&M, tights- Walmart (yep.),

boots- Ross (I believe the brand is "Groove"..haha), scarf- old/unknown

A little bit romantic, a little bit grunge (I live for 90s-anything!!). I layered the sweater over a floral dress and tights and topped it off with a pale blue pashmina. Lace up boots toughen it up a bit.

Outfit Post: By Request

My first memories of vintage being "cool" were in 9th grade. My friend Sandi would frequent our local vintage boutique (called Rag n' Bone) for quirky pieces. I particularly remember one little tank top she had from the 70s that read: "The smaller the grapes, the sweeter the wine." I think we thought it was some kind of sexual innuendo? If so, it didn't make much sense....right?

Recently Sandi purchased this pretty little black and white vintage dress but then decided the sleeves were just a bit too puffy for everyday wear. So she gifted it to Miskabelle to sell in the shop! But first, she wanted to see it styled up. Per Sandi's vision--with curly hair and red accessories. I didn't have red shoes, so a red hat and belt will have to do!

Shop this Look: Crisp Fall Day

We have been updating the shop pretty regularly (though still not as regularly as we'd like!), and there are SO many good things in there--so many that I almost forgot we purchased them! As I was updating the shop's homepage this morning for fall (warm colors!), I saw some pieces I liked and put them together into an outfit.

A blazer over a dress with some booties: the perfect fall look. I think this would look great with rich brown or plum purple tights, maybe with some added texture. Or even socks (if you're a little more of a fashion risk-taker). I like the romantic dress with the menswear-inspired jacket and slightly tough boots in a neutral color.

Outfit Post: Miss Match-y

I often seem to find myself accessorizing in a very "match-y" sort of way. I guess I just can't resist making use of the happy coincidence of owning two items in the same bold color. Case and point? This blue, white and grass green houndstooth skirt paired with a blue and white top and grass green belt. At least I'm mixing prints, right?

My match-y mind is kind of annoyed with the silver buttons on my

This skirt belonged to my great aunt--it was made by her mom (my great grandma) and has a matching jacket. I'm not really a "suit" type of girl so I don't think I'd ever wear them together (I mean, there's matchy and then there's matchy*) but I could totally see myself pairing the jacket over a dress (perhaps in navy? and perhaps belted with this same green belt?...I can't resist!). I'll save that for another outfit post.

Preview: The Red and The Black

Outfit Post: Major Remix

Sometimes I look back at previous outfits posts on the blog and wonder why I bothered posting them. At times, I feel like since I did the work to get the photos, upload and edit them, I should post the outfit. But later, I will see an outfit post and wish I'd done something different.

I don't have an unlimited clothing budget (or generous sponsors who send me whatever I want from their shops, unfortunately---but hey, if you're interested, call me!), so I remix all the time. But this time I wanted to intentionally update a look from a few weeks ago. I think it was a successful experience!

All it took as the addition of a belt and a knot to the bottom of the dress (which I've seen on several fashion bloggers and thought was a really cool update on the maxi dress or skirt), new shoes and voila! The whole outfit is much more interesting. My only beef with the second look is that it shows off my curves (of which there are many) a little more, which can make me feel a little self conscious. But, what the hell? I'm a mom, I'm healthy, I'm gonna work it. You know?

The truth is, I didn't wear this outfit anywhere. I just got dressed up for my photographer aka husband. I did leave my hair like this, though. I am loving messy/romantic updos for this in-between length of my hair. It's also funny that I feel like my hair looks so much lighter in person than in these photos! I'm actually thinking of going even a little bit lighter (do you hear that, Jayme, highlighter extraordinaire?). Taking the first plunge was a good step--I found that I love lighter hair. We'll see in October...

Outfit Post: Buttoned Up

I'm not gonna lie...having my blog roll bombarded with photos from the shows at New York Fashion Week was rather disappointing. Runway shows are decidedly less exciting when seen through still photos from someone's iPhone. I did however love seeing many of the street style posts that were shared. For some reason "real" style is just so much more inspiring to me. One resounding trend that I saw and wanted to try was the button up shirt, all the way buttoned up.

I love the detail along the front of this shirt and contrasting cuffs and collar. It will be for sale the shop soon, just fyi! I wish I had layered more necklaces with it though, because the two that I have on don't really pop enough.

My little bag is a crochet purse from the 40s--a birthday gift from my lovely friend Sandi! I added the leopard-ish print scarf to break up all the black and white. The shoes? Also for sale in the shop! Patent leather with an oversized bow... so cute.

And lastly, I must address my hair. Bye bye long locks. I love this haircut (photos above I just let it air dry which didn't do it much justice). I must admit though, I miss my long hair. It was such a great security blanket and made me feel attractive. So I'm still in the mourning stage...but I think I am going to like having this shorter hair. As a mom, it is like, a bajillion times more practical. I just need to learn how to style it as pretty as the day I got it cut (and left the salon feeling like a million bucks), then I will post some better photos.

Outfit Post: Flea Marketing

You would probably be surprised to hear that I attended my first flea market (that I can fully remember) on Saturday with my friend Katie. I have vague memories of one outdoor market that we went to when I was little, but since owning/running a vintage shop, I've been to a lot of antique stores/stalls,etc. but never an actual flea market.

The market we went to was indoors--thankfully, because it didn't just get chilly here in VA, it was downright cold! It was a lot of fun, and while I didn't purchase anything for the shop (I have a huge pile of things waiting to be photographed for fall/winter) and Katie didn't find the furniture she was looking for, we did find a few fun things for our wardrobes. I bought a 70s sweater dress that I'll be excited to debut on the blog (but really want an event to wear it to! hmmm....) and some little pieces of jewelry. I lost the medallion of my new necklace somewhere around the house yesterday and am so bummed. I hope it turns up somewhere.

Anyway, this is what I wore to explore my first flea market and then have a much-needed late lunch date at the most beautiful Whole Foods ever. Whole Foods Mecca. Whole Foods Heaven. So many delish vegan options. Sigh. (Cue Sarah Mclachlan's I Will Remember You...doobee dum dum dum.)

I love this outfit (and the most expensive and only new thing I have on is my boots, which I had to have, but also found on major sale! WIN!). Finally, my closet is coming together! Almost everything matches (yes, there is a lot of black, but I also have a lot of color) so I can pull out looks to create my gypsy/biker outfits fairly easily. And I feel like "me."

It was a great weekend, but it was loaded and not a lot of relaxation happened. So today I'm tired, but I still have a lot of work to do, errands to run, etc. I'm on my second cup of coffee, feet snuggled into my favorite slippers, looking decidedly less cute than I do in these photos. :)

Outfit Post: Birthday Suit

I turned the big 2-8 this past Wednesday. Birthdays aren't what they used to be. I've traded in parties for a casual day of shopping with the husband and the babe. But one thing that remains--an excuse to get dressed up!
I found this double collared peach blouse at the thrift this week and intended it to be for the shop, but once I tried it on and found the fit was perfect (I love that it's a button up blouse but still shows some neck) I decided I needed to add it to my personal wardrobe. Paired with a simple black skirt and flats and I still felt just a little special for my big day.

Outfit Post: Black and White and Blonde

First things first:

Happy Birthday to my awesome sister and business partner, Jayme!

Thank you for your attention to this very important message. :)

Finally! Here is my first outfit post with new hair...I'm not sure it looks all that different (until I look at past photos). It's a strawberry blonde with some golden blonde tones. And it took 3 tries. Yes, terrifyingly, I did it myself! But I have extremely thick hair, so I usually have a pretty positive experience with colors. Of course, if it turned out green or flourescent orange, I would have gone to see a professional.

I am getting really excited as my fall/winter wardrobe comes together...we have several large bags of clothes on our porch this morning, waiting to be picked up by Purple Heart (you can set up the date of the pickup and they come and get your stuff! So convenient!). I only pulled 1 or 2 things out as I closed the bags (shoes!), which is saying a lot for me.

I had a fantastic morning yesterday catching up with an old friend over breakfast, but by the time we knew it, it was one o'clock! I had to run to the post office and to pick up some hangers and do one last perusal of my thrift that's having a 50% off sale (score!). It was way hotter than I expected, so I actually changed into this outfit after errands. I picked up some groceries and dinner.

Outfit Post: Cherry on Top

I must admit--I wore this outfit to a coffee date with a friend and originally did not think it was really 'outfit post worthy.' Ripped up jeans, an old t-shirt and a cardigan isn't the most interesting combination, but add some cherry red lips and a mustard yellow beret and the outfit instantly has some pop! We found this beret while antiquing over the weekend and it will soon be for sale in the shop (it is an actual FRENCH beret and in perfect condition....and the rich mustard yellow color is to die for! Email us if you'd like first dibs--I think we'll price it around $25). {Just realized my shirt says "New Orleans French Quarters" and I paired it with a French beret! Um, I mean, I totally did that on purpose.} I am super pumped to start wearing hats--though I'm afraid it will give me even more of an excuse to skip washing my hair on days I'm extra tired from being up all night with an 8 month old. I definitely feel much more fashionable during fall/winter because scarves and hats can pretty much make any ol' outfit look cool. Red lips have the same effect but when I try wearing them I just don't feel like myself for some reason. So hats and scarves it is. What's your go-to for making a boring outfit look "cool"?

Also--I have a confession: I found my first gray hair over the weekend. So of course I immediately went out and bought a box of hair dye. So while everyone is updating their hair color for fall, I pretty much just did it out of necessity (yes it is necessary not to have gray hairs at age 27).

Shop this Look: Rainy Day Lady

Today's post was supposed to be more exciting, but the rain makes for poor lighting conditions, so I couldn't get the new photos I wanted. Maybe things will clear up for tomorrow...

It's Fashion's Night Out in many places, and while I'm not partaking in any festivities (due to work, rain, and a decided lack of interest this year), I thought about what kind of outfit might be appropriate and chic for a drizzly night.

60s wool trench - $65, Italian mosaic brooch - $18

60s heels (Size 10) - $23, Chambray dress - $27

The chambray dress has red contrasting stitching, which would look great with the red trench. I also love the brooch on the jacket for some extra interest, and of course, heels or boots are the best shoes to avoid puddles. The whole outfit comes in under $150, head to toe. And I can guarantee that no one else will be showing up in the very same thing --could you imagine a worse fate at a fashion event?! (Faint.)

Outfit Post: Summer's End

Hello everyone! We had a fantastic weekend camping with the family, but after wearing the same jeans for three days in the row (and avoiding the community shower), I decided to get a little dolled up for the Labor Day holiday. We spent the day doing a little thrifting (crazy 50% off day), grocery shopping, and dinner...and I really did indeed wear this.

My style is evolving...I have a vision of all the things I love and how they might come together. There are looks I love on other people that are just not me or don't fit my body the right way (making me feel less than confident). I love girly and bohemian looks, but also rock and roll...so I'm taking cues from that (and a lot of back...since I'm buying and dressing on a budget, and everything black matches! ha.) to create my fall wardrobe and clean out items from my closet. I also love that with a cap sleeve maxi dress in basic black/ivory, I can add color or cardigans/jackets/accessories and make it a totally different look. To keep it simple, I added a vintage pendant and platform sandals.

I loved this dress on the rack, but I knew it could look a little mom-ish. Still, it fit into the categories of the things I love, and it makes me feel comfortable and confident. And even though it's somewhat simple, it also has the great detail on the bodice (front and back). I'm a sucker for a good detail.

Outfit Post: Kimonomania

I was immediately enamored with this kimono when I found it at the thrift--it's made of a heavy, linen-like fabric in a real cool tribal-esque print and color scheme AND it has pockets. I always see things that I think are cool that might work on other, fashion-risky people, but not on me. So I put the kimono in the shop. But today, feeling uninspired, pulled it out and created two looks: one for day and one for night. I think that I might even be able to pull them off in the real (read as: not blog) world without getting strange looks. Not that I'd care because, personally, I think this jacket is really cool, a great alternative to a blazer, and definitely one of a kind!

Look 1: Kimono as a Faux Wrap Dress


I added a vintage belt to cinch the kimono and added a pair of boots and a wrist of bangles for a bohemian feel. I wore my simple black dress underneath, just to avoid any flashing. Look 2: Kimono as an Alternative to a Blazer


I have to say: I'm in love with this look. Enough that I almost want to keep the kimono. Welcome, September!

Kind of hard to believe it's September 1st! I must say, I am welcoming autumn with open arms. I have been tired of my summer wardrobe for a while now and am excited for layers and boots! I was visiting her in D.C. and it was right when we were finalizing stuff for Miskabelle (I remember going home with a clothes basket full of thrifted goods for the shop...). It was only 2 years ago, but it feels like FOREVER! We have each since had a baby girl, and moved into "grown-up" houses with our husbands. Crazy...

Fall Window Shopping on Etsy

I spent the majority of my life in a classroom: from elementary/middle/high school, to college, to student teaching, to actual teaching, to graduate school. There was always so much to look forward to once September rolled around...of course, one of the best things being back-to-school shopping.

I don't have a classroom to prepare for this year, but I'm still lusting after some pieces to update my fall wardrobe. This year, I plan on investing, instead of just buying things I find that fit and are cheap, but that I don't even wear (confession: yesterday I purged a lot of my closet/drawers and found that about 50%, maybe even more, was stuff I had thrifted and maybe worn once, but didn't realy fit into my wardrobe; the vintage stuff is going into the shop, but I'm giving the other stuff away! What a waste.).

I don't know if it's this new vegan life I'm living, but I've been drawn to very hippie and gypsy-like pieces lately. There are also some closet staples I'm on the hunt for: black lace up boots and a camel corduroy jacket--preferably with elbow patches! So I'm calling this look bohemian biker...with perhaps an addition of gypsy grandma. Yeah, it's weird. I know. I think I've been eating too many veggies. Or hemp.

In love...

I am head over heels in love....with a dress. This floor length gown with sweetheart neckline and ever so slightly puffed sleeves was thrifted by Amanda when I was about 7 months pregnant. The dress was beautiful on the hanger but was not going to budge over my growing belly. The baby in that growing belly is now 8 months old, so I figured I could take the plunge and try on the dress. It fits to perfection--the zipper just pulls shut without a millimeter to spare. But alas, I have nowhere to wear the dress so I figured I would take some photos of it and send it out into the world...or into our etsy shop.

40s floor length dress with navy polka dot bodice and cream mesh layered skirt

Fully lined (no slip required! In the photos you can see two sets of 'bra straps'--one is my bra, the other is the interior of the dress). Outer layer of skirt is about 4 inches longer than under layer and hem is unfinished (so it may need trimmed/mended). $125.

Did you know there are there are 27 million people every single year who are forced into various types of slavery? Victoria is doing her part and being a voice for these people. It is so refreshing to find a blogger with a cause.

Outfit Post: Beach Casual

Hello! It's Amanda. And we're at the beach.

A girl could get used to this...

I brought mostly bathing suits, cover-ups and comfy clothes...but that doesn't mean I'm not still attempting to look cute here on vacay!

This is what I wore to the beach today...we had perfect weather and Aurora finally got brave and went into the water! After that, we couldn't get her out! She turned into a sweet little chattering prune, but she loved every minute of it.

I steal this t-shirt from Q pretty regularly, so it's basically become mine. Vintage concert tees are at a premium, and I love this Replacements one so much (I suppose vintage concert tee hand-me-downs are an advantage of marrying someone a bit older! ha). It's perfectly worn in, slightly sheer, and long--I knotted it and rolled the sleeves to make it a great beach top cover up.

No more work--it's time to play! Be back to reality all too soon...

Outfit Post: Go-To Boots

There's something about a good pair of worn-in cowboy boots that make me feel like a million bucks. After months of scouring the internet for the perfect vintage pair, I found mine at a thrift store. In my size. And for 5 bucks. I must say, it was my biggest thrifting success to date.
I love nothing more than being able to throw on these boots with a dress. The heel is high enough to do the job (of making me feel taller and thinner) but low enough to be comfortable to walk in. This particular day included a 30 minute walk up and down the street with my baby girl in her front carrier (it was a [failed] attempt to get her to take a nap). It was also raining which is why the toe of the boot looks a bit darker than the rest of it...I'm hoping they dry out and the discoloration goes away. But even if it doesn't I will still love my boots just the same!

The denim dress paired with western style boots could make for a very "cowgirl" kind of look, so to detract from that I added a ladylike cardigan and a silk scarf in my hair. And for the sake of comfort--no belt! It is rare occasion that I don't belt a tent-y dress like this one. My trusty boots give me courage to do crazy things, I tell ya.

Outfit Post: Modern Housewife

The print of this vintage top caught my eye at the thrift this week...I looked closer to see adorable buttons and POCKETS. I looked even closer, and noticed the print wasn't random little dots, but fruit(!): apples, blueberries, and pears. So sweet! Literally. Although it may go into the shop one fine day, it's mine for day.

The weather is finally cool enough for pants! Which is fortunate, since my bike accident has left me with the most disgusting bruised and scraped legs, on top of about ten bug bites. I also can't shave some of the scrapes, so you can imagine--it's a war zone. I'm hoping they clear up in the next few days for the beach!

I felt super cute in this outfit...even with my high platform wedges, the jeans are still pretty long, so I might have them hemmed an inch or so (thanks in advance, sis!) come fall.

Vintage at the Office: Outfits Under $100

I realize that Mad Men actually takes place in the 60s, and so the outfits the girls wear at the time are "modern" for them, even though they're considered vintage to us...but watching an episode (just saw the pilot! I am behind in the times! Even though Jon Hamm is one of my very top actor crushes, alongside Ryan Gosling and Clive Owen) got me thinking about how to wear vintage to the office. I don't work in an office anymore--something I'm kind of glad about--but should I re-enter the more traditional workforce, I wouldn't want to sacrifice my style.

Outfit Post: Pumpkin is the New Mustard

I am beyond ecstatic that fall is just around the corner. I'm tired of sweating, tired of mosquito bites, tired of not being able to wear some of my favorite clothes (boots and tights and blazers and cozy cardigans). I found this perfect skirt while thrifting--the belt was included. It's 100% cotton and the most perfect shade of pumpkin orange. It will be great for fall with some lace up wedges or even boots. The shape is similar to the red skirt I wore last week, but it's a little bit longer, which I love.

For the hotter-than-hot Sunday that we took a daytrip to Richmond, I wore it with a little tie strap tank and some sandals. (Also, notice my hair: the bangs are finally growing out and I did a modified version of the no-heat curls that are all the rage on Pinterest/bloggers right now. I hate to be trendy, but damn, do they work! And they're so easy!)

We happened to decide to try out Richmond on the day of their Watermelon Festival. It sounds like a great fortune, but really, it was just loud, and crowded, and we didn't get to do the things we wanted to. There are some great vegan places we couldn't find and I lost my list of thrift spots. It was so hot that we basically went into the first restaurant we came to, which had only one vegan menu item and was unfortunately way overpriced.

We really liked the area, though, and hope to do another daytrip in the fall. Maybe I'll even wear this skirt again...

So anyway, I'm calling it right here, right now: mustard has been all the rage the past few years, and I still love it, but pumpkin is going to be this fall's hot new color. If only because I say so. ;)

Outfit Post: Cat Lady

I bet you are dying to see the outfit that I have so lovingly titled: "Cat Lady." I bet you are picturing an oversized granny dress and those slide-on slippers. Or maybe those sweat pants with the elastic at the hem paired with a giant flannel shirt?
I won't lie...I actually don't even like cats all that much (don't hate me!). I did however wear this outfit to go to my in-laws' home to check in on their cats while they are away. This translates to: I paced around the house with Lyla (my 7 month old...click here to meet her and Amanda's baby, Aurora) while my husband fed the cats and changed their litter boxes. That's about all we did this weekend...so it was my only excuse to really get dressed. And I am totally okay with that!

No sweat pants or slippers were involved but I totally could see this on a cat lady out and about-- the long sweater (which I once got made fun of behind my back by a co-worker for wearing excessively...I believe her words were something like "it's not even cute.") and the button up shirt accessorized with a brooch. I spiced it up a bit with the mini skirt and cinched waist (confession: I just recently learned how to spell that word. All these years I've been spelling it "sinched" and wondering why my spell check didn't recognize it!). Then I got all cat lady-ish again with the practical flat shoes. My real excuse is that I am dressing for mom duty!

Shop Preview: Bits and Pieces

I really enjoy finding vintage shoes/bags/accessories more than the clothes (if you can believe it!). I guess it's partially because accessories and bags can "fit" anyone, so I can try them on for size while they wait to be purchased. :) The best vintage clothes are so tiny! Recently we have found some larger pieces, including a gorgeous metallic grecian-like maxi dress (below).
